I remember finger bowls, white tablecloths, etc. on Amtrak. I was also on the first "Superliner" where all that went away. My dad and I were on the news talking about the changes to Amtrak. I'm sure I have it on BETA somewhere

Well it depends. Certain long-haul Amtrak routes get more goodies for the sleeping car passengers than others. In 2006, when I did my trip, service cuts were in full force on less profitable routes, including the Sunset Limited that I was on. We had the "juice," which tasted like Tang, and some ice, and some awful coffee set out for us. There were two very small bottles of water in the room when you boarded, which were never replenished. Had I not brought my own I would have been buying it in the snack bar on a regular basis.
That's part of Amtrak's problem on the long-haul stuff. Even if you have the time to kill on the journey, the service is highly unpredictable, and varies greatly by route. |

That's sad. In 2006 when I rode the Sunset it was airline-style catering (although most of what they served was pretty good) on plastic "china" (looked real but wasn't), and certainly no finger bowls and white linens.
I'm talking 70s, my friend. |

I have done the Amtrak on the california Coast and from SMF to RNO. Both were very scenic but I was young. In fact I may have been too young.
Not that it would stop my parents. They have told me repeatedly that they use to stop at historic markers off the free way and drop me off and leave me only to return later and pick me up. They also lost me as a 2 yr old at Disney World. Of course that is a trip I am also suppose to remember. |
