I don't like the strategy of using the miles, but I don't think I'll be successful in changing her mind...

Yes, it happens. The key is to get on the waitlist if you want the upgrade. Also, you have co-pays now as a non-elite if you're on a cheap fare, unless you're going for something other than a Series 0.

No, and there's good reason for it in our case. A consistently good product, free internet, and the breakfast have led us to become Hampton lovers. The points+points option is a better deal than 100 RDM.

To the Leisure markets (FL, Caribbean), it shouldn't be too difficult. Some Caribbean markets go out with empties in F.

Hmmmmm. Maybe it's not such a bad idea if I can find seats to SXM, PUJ, SJU, or a 752 to FLL for our honeymoon cruise.

CM, you could always "share an address" with a MMer. You'd be guaranteed Plat, Gold, or Silver, depending upon the circumstances.

Remember, a significant discount from insane is still ridiculous. They're freakin' rocks, for cryin' out loud!

She's already got a ring that appraised for $2k more than I paid. No one is going to pay appraisal value in this market, but no one has to know how much of a break I got from appraisal value either. The price rape might not be that bad if I'm going in with proceeds from a flipped ring. EDIT: D/IF isn't something she is gung-ho for. I think she'd be happy with loupe-clean.

CO.com just gave me mileage upgrades to STT (Series 1) with no copay. Or did it do this because I wasn't signed in?

But wouldn't the MMer have to commit to me being the other person for a year?

Sounds like a win-win, from your perspective. Just don't change your Primary Address with CO during that year, or be prepared to suffer the wrath of the Revenue Management Agents. I hear they're scarier than the IRS version. :D

It does sound win-win, but I'd suspect that anyone with lifetime status would almost assuredly have a spouse/partner that would be cheesed over me getting the goodies instead of them.

Fly up front on CO, Chuck and Larry style! :D

ETA: I have a second cousin that is Infinite Plat. He's also got no street smarts. I wonder if he added his wife to his almost-certainly MM account.

I've never heard of an appraisal being anywhere close to what was paid. It is a game between the retailers, the appraisers and the insurance folks.

Series 1 has no co-pay. Only Series 0 and BF upgrades do. If you can get those seats on a 752 to STT for the honeymoon (and the fare isn't too horrible) I'd take them.

There's got to be a way to establish a fair market price for jewelry that's already been bought from the retailer.

And I read your post backwards the last time. Got it now. Miles only = non-BF market. I never seriously tried to get reward upgrades before, so I'm learning on the fly.

If only the honeymoon of choice did start in STT...but that is a port. We're originating from FLL. But given the time between that cruise and the actual wedding (~2 to 5 months BUA) a mini-moon might be in order, and if the fares are right and a convincing case can be made, I think that might be where she burns her miles.

What's with the agents at IAH? :p They are angels :p

Over the weekend, one of my flights was potentially oversold. The gate agent was trying to help me to get a maximum amount of bump $. She told me her supervisor authorized only $200. When I told her it was too low, she whispered to me to just wait until I heard the numbers I wanted until they made another annoucement.

When they did, and a couple came and took the offer. I wasn't happy. Then, I asked her if she still needed me....she said maybe and told me she knew where I was sitting and she would come to me if she heard from her supervisor.

At departure time, she thought they only needed 1 person to be bumped, so she persuaded her supervisor to let those 2 who volunteered board. She said she would give me their combined $400 instead.

I was :D and  and as I was filling out the VDB form, the FA came out and said they had 1 more seat left. They were expecting a checked in passenger to show up, but I guess he didn't make his connection. So, in the end, it didn't work out, and I had to sit in a completely packed flight (booked in Y...I should've picked a middle seat for 2500 miles :p). But, I was impressed by how nice she was :p

I think we are going to have to cap it here because the only other place we are going to be able to reserve enough space is Cadillac Bar or Gravitas and the latter requires that I pay and set the menu (which I'd rather not do).

Hartmann: Thanks for adding me to the list! Unfortunately, I'm flying solo on this one unless I manage to pick up some hottie at the PC/DO/Doubletree. ;)

IAH generally has excellent staff, as does CLE. EWR is a different beast altogether.
