So I got back from my trip to DAY and the USAF Museum, and I log everything into FlightMemory. Then I filter it to display 2008 only and realize that my home airport is not my most-visited airport. I use EWR or PHL based on fares and times that suit, and CLE is my most visited airport of the year, since my September PHL-CLE-MCO is already loaded in. (Took a bump on the CLE-DAY leg and got $300 - called girlfriend right away and informed her that there is no choice in the matter: we are flying CO in September.) We were toying with trying WN. Anyhoo, the question occurred to me to ask in The Box, especially those of us who are FM users: has your home airport ever NOT been the top-visited for any given year?

So far this year SFO is my top airport (8) followed by JFK (5), LAX (4) and EWR (3). If I play the NYC card I guess I'm tied between SFO and NYC, but that is questionable. It should start to balance out later this year, as I have a EWR-JAX-EWR next weekend and then some other flights later this summer which should help it catch up. In 2005 I had EWR at 33, DCA at 28 and LGA at 16. A few more DL shuttle flights and I would've had DCA as my top airport, excluding the NYC effect.

Forgot to mention: said bump got me said $300 voucher, and also put me from non-CO.com L fare to Y. Hi there, 150%. Nice to meet you.

sbm12, you're right about the NYC effect. Given that you're a Manhattan guy, I would consider JFK your "home", all things being equal. Then again, I live closer to ACY than anywhere else. ACY stopped being my airport of choice quite some time ago.

If JFK is my "home" then I've never had "home" on the top of my FlightMemory. I'm roughly equi-distant from the three airports (10 miles to LGA, 14 to EWR, 18 to JFK), but I fly more from JFK/EWR on my own dime thanks to the train options. LGA is almost always work travel, and I still try to avoid it except for the DL Shuttle. And since I'm generally on CO and rarely connecting, EWR is my general "home" airport.

Sure, I agree only because I've looked at your memory page. Not knowing anything about an average Manhattan resident, one would likely assume JFK.

It depends on where you are in Manhattan. Im in Midtown East so LGA is closest to me (and cheapest via slow public transportation), unless Im leaving from work (Bryant Park area) then its EWR.

I had one year where EDI was my top airport. Then again, I was living in EDI at the time...

This year's top 9 List (like Most) has IAH squarely on top:

1 IAH Houston 25
2 ATL Atlanta 16
3 MSY New Orleans 10
4 DFW Dallas/Fort Worth 8
T5 SFO San Francisco 6
T5 SLC Salt Lake City 6
T5 LAX Los Angeles 6
T6 DTW Detroit 4
T6 EZE Buenos Aires 4
T6 SEA Seattle 4
T6 BOS Boston 4
T6 AKL Auckland 4
T6 GRU Sao Paulo 4
T7 SYD Sydney 3
T7 JFK New York 3
T8 IAD Washington 2
T8 ZQN Queenstown 2
T8 ORD Chicago 2
T8 CVG Cincinnati 2
T8 CHC Christchurch 2
T8 SCL Santiago 2
T8 CLE Cleveland 2
9 LGA New York 1

No recent years have any airport beating out EWR (home) but IAH is always a pretty close second.

2008:
12 - EWR
10 - IAH

2007:
32 - EWR
22 - IAH

ssullivan Apr 10, 2008 10:12 pm

So far IAH is on top of my list for the year. Here are my top airports for 2008 (so far):
  1. IAH - 34
  2. ATL - 22
  3. IAD - 8
  4. DEN - 8
  5. LBB - 6
  6. ORD - 4
  7. DTW - 4
  8. DAL - 4
  9. GJT - 4
  10. SLC - 4
  11. MSY - 2
  12. LGW - 2
  13. MAF - 2
  14. RDU - 2
  15. EWR - 2
  16. CLE - 2
  17. SAN - 2
  18. MDW - 1
  19. TOL - 1
  20. DCA - 1

For the first time in several years MSP isn't even on my list! Never thought I'd see that day come... although I'm headed back there in less than two weeks.

Hope you at least got a good seat in Y. :D

Just going for the weekend? Was there some good fare that I missed?

Well, so far my middle-row has only myself in it. Barring some post-boarding seat-switcher, hopefully I'll get the whole row to stretch out in. No good fare. I simply can't go for more than a year without visiting Den Haag.

Gauging Interest - Fly a 707 (Requires Travel to Iran)

Scott's tales at the last Dinner DO and This A.net Thread got me thinking about chances to fly on a 707 in commercial service (dwindling fast).

Looks like Saha Air of Iran is the last carrier still operating them, and that they have been putting their fleet through D-Checks recently (so hopefully fully refurbed and in service for a few years to come). Given that I need to get a segment in on Air Astana by some point next year as well, this could be the perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.

Kazakhstan & Iran in 2009, anyone? I know ssullivan has got to be down with flying on a 707. :D

I'm in. But, only if I get a CO-branded kevlar helmet and vest.
