• Feb 2018 - BXP1, BXP2, BXP3 Upgrade Certificates can be redeemed electronically, without the need to redeem or submit paper certificates.
  • Dec 2015 - Unannounced more-restrictive changes to BXP upgrade certificates implemented.
  • Nov 2015 - Europe AA Business Extra closed and migrated to AA-BA-IB On Business
  • Oct 2014 - Business Extra Awards may be redeemed for flights on US Airways
  • Sep 2013 - Business ExtrAA brand changed to simply Business Extra
  • Sep 2012 - Upgrade Awards are no longer restricted to use within 30 days of travel

Key Information
  • Promotion Codes - For a current list of Business ExtrAA promotions, see: Business ExtrAA Bonus Offers (consolidated)

  • Point Expiration - Business Extra points expire on a rolling basis, two years after the year in which they are earned, on December 31 at midnight U.S. Central Time. Their validity can not be extended.

  • Award Redemption - All awards must be redeemed via the Business Extra website. Flight Awards are delivered electronically via email with an Electronic Authorization Number. Upgrade Awards and Admirals Club Day Passes are delivered in paper certificate form via regular mail. Redemption sweeps occur twice per week and expedited delivery is available if you provide your FedEx/UPS account number via email. Gold Status and Admirals Club Membership awards are processed and active in the member's account after approximately one week, with other membership materials delivered in the mail within 4 weeks.

Note: BE awards must be booked on nonstop flights if they are available between your origin and destination.

  • Award Inventory Codes - Per Meeting Services, Business Extra Awards book into the following inventory (although there are conflicting reports from mvoight and InsipidMonkey on whether or not this information is accurate for PlanAAhead Awards, for which availability may be significantly less than MileSAAver Award and/or T inventory availability):Award Type Books Into
    PlanAAhead - Economy T
    PlanAAhead - Business* U
    PlanAAhead - First Z

    AAnytime - Economy Y
    AAnytime - Business* J
    AAnytime - First F

    Upgrade to Business* C
    Upgrade to First A

    * = First class cabin on 2-class flights
= First class cabin on 3-class flights

  • Flight Award Reservations - Award Tickets must be booked through AA Meeting Services at 1-800-433-1790 (U.S. and Canada; others contact your local reservations office), and you will need to provide the Reservations Agent with the Electronic Authorization Number from your award certificate. As of Oct 2012, flight awards can be booked without a telephone booking service charge.

  • Flight Award Expiration - As published on the Business Extra website, Award Tickets must be booked within one year of redeeming the certificate, and are then valid for one year from booking:

Award ticket must be issued by midnight one year from the original award redemption date. Tickets issued against Business Extra flight awards are then valid for one year from the ticket issue date.
  • Upgrade Award Reservations - Upgrade Awards may be applied once a reservation is Ticketed by calling AA Meeting Services or using the Business Extra website. Once requested online you will receive an email with a confirmation number and serial numbers for each upgrade certificate requested.

Upgrade Awards carry fare restrictions (excludes B, N, O, Q or S fares). Take careful note of your fare when making a reservation. It is possible to "Upfare" a reservation from the lowest available fare to an BXP-upgrade-eligible fare by placing it on Hold at AA.com, calling AA to request the desired higher fare basis code, then completing the purchase online.

    You can specify ITA searches that exclude the ineligible fares as follows:jfk:: aa /f ~bc = b & ~bc = n & ~bc = o & ~bc = q & ~bc = s

(Or you can place everything after the slash directly in the second advanced control box.)

    These filters can also be concatenated with other commands, such as maximum duration, separated with a semicolon:jfk:: aa /maxdur 800 ; f ~bc = b & ~bc = n & ~bc = o & ~bc = q & ~bc = s

  • Upgrade Award Expiration - Electronic BXP Upgrade Awards are valid for 1 year from redemption. Previously, paper Upgrade Awards were valid thru Jun 30 or Dec 31 of the following year, with the exact date depending on the batch of certificates available at the time of redemption.

  • Returning Unused Awards - Points redeemed for awards but not yet applied to a ticket can be returned for no charge by using the 'returns' option in your account options. Points will be reinstated with an expiration date 2 calendar years from reinstatement (i.e., expiring on December 31 two calendar years from reinstatement). For awards already applied to a ticket, you must call Business ExtrAA customer services at 800-457-7072, or email [email protected]. Customers outside the US should use the email.
  • Business Extra Account Credit - A Business Extra number can be added to an existing reservation (for example, booked by a third-party travel agent) by calling AA Meeting Services.

A Business Extra number can be added to an existing BA reservation as follows:
    1. Go to www.britishairways.com
    2. Select 'Manage My Booking' tab
    3. Follow the instructions to pull up your reservation
    4. Select the link towards bottom listed under 'Quick Links' 'Add On Business or Business Extra number'
    5. Add your Business Extra number and check the box to give your consent.

Retroactive credit for completed travel can be requested via the Business Extra website.

I submitted a whole chunk of missing flights - mostly BA as noted before.
A good chunk of them have posted now so it is possible that AA has again got information from BA.

I keep having one of my BE flights (for a team member, not myself) get rejected.

She flew Domestic F STL to ORD, F ORD to LHR on BA A380, Euro J on LHR to ZRH. Same booking classes and route on the way back. Shes flown this a few times and it has always credited.

This time BE is not crediting it. Could it possibly be that she used her BA number instead of her AA number? She definitely has the Business Extra number attached to the flight, as I booked it. I am also positive I put it on her AA account. Just trying to think what might cause them to reject it and this is the only possible issue I can think of - but I dont even know if her using her AA account is required as long as the proper BE number is on the reservation?

I always credit miles to BA and usually get BusinessExtra credit on AA flights - booked with AA flight numbers - within the month. BA has been a problem for several months.
Did you submit a retro request?
Once they process it they usually supply a reason for rejection.

I did. The reason was that BA rejected it; I have already chased for clarification. Thanks for the data point!

Is it possible to use a BXP1 to upgrade from A321T J to F? The business.aa.com website says I'm already in the highest class of service on the TCON leg.

Yes, shouldn't be a problem.

While I appreciate that Business Extra tried to automate some of the award and upgrade booking stuff online, IME when it comes to booking awards or confirming upgrades the BE site is worthless more times than not.

Just give Meeting Services a call to grab the upgrade.

I used a BXP1 to upgrade an ORD- SFO flight and now there's been a pretty big schedule change. If I want to change flights, does there have to be C space open or will the agent move me to a flight that works....within reason? Also, do I have to call BE or can a regular agent take care of the change?

It worked. Went from Y-J-F on a cheap app upgrade to J then BXP1 to F. Not bad.

Bus extra number on booked BA flights

I follow the instructions, sort of, as I don’t see what’s in the wiki. But I get to a place to add it, add it and get message below. I’ve entered the number before, in my account, and it applied to future bookings. This was 3 years or so ago, maybe 4. What’s the issue?

This was after logging in and entering booking and going to manage my booking….

That's how I add my Business Extra number to BA bookings although I haven't added one for the last few weeks. My guess is that you've encountered the wonders of BA's crumbling IT. I would suggest you call BA or contact them on the Chat function or Twitter (X) and they should be able to add it for you together with a BA booking reference.

I had the same issue a month or more ago. I think Im just not doing something right. Yes the it sucks. had a lot of issues with FF numbers as well.

so Im clear, its a BA issued RT with one outbound(LHR to LAX) on AA metal, rest on BA. Planning to credit outbound two segments to AA and then inbound in April to BA as Im working on BA status after my new year starts(after the outbound). Assume there is no issue doing this and adding my bus extra number to all flights?

I have never tried crediting part of a ticket to our program and the rest to another so I cannot comment on that. However, there should be no problem adding your Business Extra number to the whole booking. Probably easiest to contact BA and get them to do it. If possible, keep a record of the conversation as it's not possible to see what company program is in a BA ticket after it's been added so if it doesn't show up as a credit to Business Extra you will have something to point to in order to prove you requested it.

Tried BA.com chat this am to add BE number and this was the response.

I have checked this for you with my team. As per the information received, the business extra program is with American Airlines and you need to speak with them in regards with this to update.

I have verified and checked this with my team. twice. We do not have any special place to add the number. We can only add the frequent flyer number. As suggested by the team, I tried to update the same number there however, it says invalid number. I am really sorry however, just to let you know that I tried and I am sharing the correct information for you. I really want to help you.

Also tried calling BA and just got a ..we are too busy call back later message for both existing bookings and other questions.

Will have to try again or do on the back end. If any one has any other ideas, I am all ears

PS Went back to the manage my booking site again after the call. There is a blue bar that appears with along the bottom of the screen when the booking is displayed with more options on it and I found the Add On Business or Business Extra to your booking and was able to do it on two separate bookings.

I am on an almost empty flight , Im considering removing my BXP1 certificate as at a minimum Ill have a hole row of coach seats to myself and likely Ill get a complimentary upgrade anyway.

Can I remove a BXP1 upgrade online or should I call in? I didnt see an option and I want to make sure its still useable for future use. I assume the system will revert back to auto requesting the upgrade for status members even if a bxp1 is removed ?

thanks!
