Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:

Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:

Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

no-both trips are in the off peak time frame for Europe

It sounds like the IB seats are available to you. What is inexplicable (to me) is why AA is trying to charge you an extra 10K miles/person for the BCN-MAD leg on a BCN-MAD-PHL itinerary. Is the date of travel changing (from off-peak to peak) from what you originally booked?

Indeed, this is the reason... waiting for the outbound to open up but putting the available return on hold and, if needed, ticket.

Did a search but there seems to be debate about this:

Does AA block seats next to elites in F? I'm flying domestic F as a OWE (not AAdvantage). Selected my seat a while ago from an empty cabin. Cabin is still completely empty, except for the seat next to mine being taken. Is it blocked, or does someone really want to sit next to me?

"I called and tried to rebook BCN-Madrid-PHL, but since the first leg is Iberia, AA won't allow me to do so without coughing up more miles."

How many more miles, and why? BCN-MAD-PHL should be bookable as a single award.
So I am still not sure why AA would totally cancel our flight and refuse to allow us to fly home BCN-Madrid-PHL at an off peak time (November) unless we cough up 10,000 extra miles per ticket (which we are not willing to do ). We are traveling to BCN to take a cruise. I'm on the cruise critic roll call for our cruise. At least 3 others have reported difficulty rebooking their return trip to PHL after originally ticketing awards on the same non-stop return flight to PHL as us (which was cancelled). At least one of the individuals was never even notified of the cancellation by AA-my Cruise Critic post alerted them. We are not on a group tour-all of us booked our awards independently. One other person spent 5 hours on the phone with AA trying to get a flight home after the BCN-PHL non-stop was cancelled. Can AA appeal to a liaison at Iberia to open up 2 Saver seats (and how would I request this as a non-elite)? If not, should I complain to the Department of Transportation about the BCN-JFK_LGA_PHL routing? or do I risk having our business class seats on the BCN-PHL flights disappear if I complain. I have had schedule changes with other airlines. All except AA have been accommodating.

Any award seat that AA can book on IB is a SAAver seat; AAnytime seats are only available on AA metal. BCN-MAD in Y costs 10K miles as a stand-alone SAAver award. Perhaps IB is only making those seats available as a stand-alone award, and not as part of a TATL (the reverse of a married-segment issue).

How to find flight number for AA codeshare flights

I tried searching but didn't find an answer.

Do monitors at LHR show all flight numbers, ex. AA and British Airways?

EDIT: Do AA boarding passes show multiple flight numbers for codeshares?

EDIT: I did find a website, FlightLookup but it would be nice if I could see the flight numbers side by side to be sure I'm looking at the right info. Also found FlightStats which seems like what I'm looking for.

I have an itinerary that has been reserved on AA. Is there a way to look up the flight number for a code share flight? I tried using the BA website (outbound segment) but the flights don't seem to match up. On the return the flight is operated by "Aero Rentas De Coahuila", whoever that is?

The easy way for me to identify today's codeshares is to use FlightBoard app.

At airport, the flight boards will display all codeshares; an AA flight might have six.

As to Aero Rentas de Coahuila, Sociedad Anónima de Capital Variable, AFAIK that was a small northern Mexican airline that went into bankruptcy a few years ago.

I guess I'll be going but not coming back, that's odd. I will check out Flight board app. I know, I think, that I am going from T3 to T5 so I will check monitors after I transfer.

Thanks very much.

Need help with award to Patagonia

Hi I am working on a couple of award tickets to the Patagonia region from SAN. Ideally, I would like to fly into Ushuaia and fly out of Balmaceda. When I put in these two airport codes on BA.com, I get messages saying BA and the partners do not serve these airports but I do know that LAN has flights in/out of these airports.

My questions:

1. If seats are available, would I be able to use my AA miles to book award tickets into USH and out of BBA?

2. Should I stick with AA flights or try for LAN flights out of LAX.

Many thanks.

1. Yes. In principle, you can use AA miles to book seats on any LAN flight. In practice, it may be difficult to find availability (particularly in the austral summer). You may have more luck using miles to get to SCL, and paying for the domestic flights within Chile on Sky or LAN.

2. I'd actually try for LAN first, since with AA you'll have to go via DFW or MIA. But given the likely difficulty finding award space, you should probably go with whatever you can get.

You might look into using award miles to get to EZE, SCL or ? and either buying local flights or using a oneworld Visit South America Pass (minimum three sectors, zone based, etc.) I'm not familiar with the product myself, but passes can offer savings to purchasing flights by themselves.

"Book as many flights as you like with your oneworld Visit South America Pass (minimum three flights), using the services of American Airlines, British Airways, LAN, Qatar Airways, TAM and their affiliates.

Simply confirm the first segment of your itinerary when you make your booking and enjoy the flexibility of leaving your remaining segments open-dated."

https://www.oneworld.com/flights/sin...-south-america

Or call AA, though it's always easier to find awards first and then call.

AA Gold Baggage Check question

Travelling on a flight marketed by AA but not operated by either American Eagle or American. As a Gold member I normally get free bag check for myself and my son traveling on the same itinerary (record locator). In this case, am I likely to have to pay bags fees? I did purchase the tickets using my Citi Platinum card at least, but that usually would only get me the one bag I believe.

My flight:
3352 American Airlines
Operated by Envoy Air As American Eagle

From the policy:
"marketed and operated by American Airlines or marketed by American or American Eagle"

Finally, my husband will be joining me for one of the legs but has different record locator number because we booked at a later date. Is there any way to connect our common segment so that he can benefit by my free bag perk if indeed it is offered to me on this flight?

Envoy Air as American Eagle is an American Eagle flight so you will get your first bag free as a Gold.

Note for the Citicard benefit you don't have to purchase your flight with the card. You just have to have the card and have your AA number in your reservation at least 7 days before the flight. Not that it matters for this flight since you are AA Gold.

Good to know about this flight. I was worried about that.

Guess I should have made my husband an authorized user on my Citi acct. I thought that simply purchasing his ticket on my card would get him a free bag. He took my card to the airport with him this morning for his flight but they told him I had to be there for him to get a free bag checked. Maybe I can request an authorized user and they will overnight the card to me and he can use it on the return.

Thanks for the help!

AA and travel to Japan

Hi All,

May i please get some clarification on traveling to Japan through AA. Am i correct in understanding that there will no longer be an "off peak" for Japan.

I had intended on taking my girlfriend to Japan in December '16 and started by signing up for the Citi AA 50K credit card yesterday to help cover one of the tickets. If there is no longer an off peak that means December will now go from 25K one way to 35k one way?

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you!
