Newbie question and sorry if already asked...what's the point of the pairings? Thanks.

The number for each city pair is the maximum distance permitted (one way) for any route between your origin and destination. This helps in planning stopovers and layovers along the way.

Might be a dumb question, but I'm only asking since they used to have MPM5...is there totally 0 flexibility to these numbers?

I'm looking at YVR-BKK shows in the sticky as 12150, the route I just checked on gcmap YVR-YYZ-WAW-IST-DXB-BKK is 12184.

Now I just called...this is what I was quoted...

YVR-BKK 12,160
BKK-YVR 12,170

Even she couldn't explain the extra 10 miles...but that's also a 10 mile bump from the 12,150 on the sticky.

Gc map is not accurate to the mile. Good for ballpark, but when you're pushing the margin, just call and ask to validate

Fair enough, maybe I'll give that a shot. It's really the best routing based on availability and letting me stop in DXB.

This would've worked, so would YVR-YYZ-IST-DXB-BKK.

The problem was getting the J seats. I had everything lined up, but one of the connections was like 30 minutes too short to connect and 1 hour too long to make it a < 24 stop.

In the end...I'm pleased to report the routing worked.

Just booked

YVR-YYZ-WAW-IST-DXB-BKK

Sadly my return crushed my spirits so I had to let it go. Wanted to fly 380 and 350 but OZ across the pacific got my fuel surcharge to almost $800 CAD. Scrapped that, got BR for $450 total roughly. Honestly the $800 probably wasn't that bad, but it's a short J trip and I figure I can fly 380/350 maybe in the future. The 350 is still perhaps in the cards, originally when I looked (a couple days back) TG DXB-BKK was a 350, then it got swapped to 330. Hopefully they switch it back, we'll see.

Thanks for the help folks.

So I've heard

Fingers crossed!

I will say there's some quirks in the whole thing though. Like it seems strange to me that YYC-BKK is quoted way lower than YVR, YOW/YYZ are quoted marginally lower.

Also it's a bit funny that while my furthest destination in this case was BKK (not by much admittedly) but I PAID for DXB because it's more expensive on the award chart. Just a lil quirky is all.

Do you mean to say you paid NA-Middle East mileage, but were still subject to YVR-BKK MPM?

Yup, exactly.

I knew that going in, or at least I thought I did, but I confirmed with her over the phone. Just a little quirk. I understand the award chart isn't necessarily based just on distance, but I found it funny that I was subject to MPM for BKK and Costs for DXB.

Don't suppose anyone has called recently and has the MPM between YVR-EZE? I'd call but I'm out of country at the moment.

BTW, the info for MPM on expertflyer...what's that good for? I checked YVR-BKK pursuant to my trip booking and the number EF gives is way off from what AP gives.

Alright, so when I got back home I got a chance to call AC.

If anyone wants to add this to the sticky or wiki...

YVR-EZE 11,557 was what I was quoted
