On board is obviously going to be after all upgrades and standbys have cleared.
Do you really want to stand up in front of everyone and say "I'll pay $800!" ?

Also, payment processing on board is more challenging than "on the ground".

The FA always says "You'll need to talk to the gate agent". So why can't people just turn around, walk up, and do it that way?

Well perhaps not, having not tried it I don’t know how it works on other airlines I assume you’d just ask a FA if there’s space and for the cost.

Some airlines seem to manage it, but trying to flag down a spare FA in Y on any airline during boarding seems... problematic to moi. So pass.

Why is this thread so dead?

Has anyone had any luck changing their FQTV from Aeroplan to United after a confirmed upgrade (either in advance or at the gate) ?

To address the first point, I think that the that the thread is "dead" because, thanks to earlier posts, a lot of us have learned from the experiences of others and have both worked the angles when we can and tempered our expectations.

Your latter question is still an interesting one. Since I mostly fly in paid J anyway, I'm not qualified to address this but look forward to hearing from someone who can.

I have not been seeing any instances lately where the R number is jumping up and down as described by the OP. So maybe it has become a non-issue?

I do it all the time for my flight pass travel, but that is allowed and obviously different from an R upgrade.

Flying GRU-YYZ-MSP soon (inside 7 day window)

GRU-YYZ in E, YYZ-MSP in A

EF shows P space for GRU-YYZ-MSP but does not show for GRU-YYZ

CS won’t upgrade me because GRU-YYZ is P0. I maintain that I am flying GRU-MSP via YYZ so there is P space.

HUCA or am I wrong?

Upgrade availability is generally determined on a per-segment basis IME. However, in order to upgrade an E fare, you would need R space, not P space.

Yeah, you are wrong. You are flying PY E, so you need R space to upgrade into, not P. Only if you hold a Latitude or PY O ticket can you upgrade into international P space.

Right. Not used to flying non flexible fares.

Cheers.

who gets priority to be upgraded to business at the gate considering both of them requested through eupgrade but the R class is not available - showing 0, but there are still a few empty seats in business class through AC site?

1st scenario:
An elite 50k, with premium economy N class VS a SE with economy M class

2nd scenario:
an elite 50k with premium economy O class vs a SE with economy M class

3rd scenario:
a SE with premium eco N class VS a SE with economy Y class

4th scenario:
an elite 50k with economy Y class VS a SE with prem eco N class

thank you!

Cabin, status, fare class, check-in time.

So, the eupgrade booking window won’t matter then when R has 0 availability?

It might only matter if R > 0, then an SE at economy M class can trump an elite 50k at prem eco N class where the 50k has only 5 days window time VS SE-7 days?

You're asking two different things.

Yes, when R is positive, then whoever has dibs on R gets those dibs on R. If R goes positive (from R0) before date of departure, it does not necessarily mean that those on the waitlist will automatically get that R based on cow's priority - they have to re-apply for that R. So cow's answers are correct based on what you specifically asked.

So say if 3 days to departure and R becomes R1, both the waitlisted SE M and waitlisted E50 N have equal dibs and have to grab that R. (the system doesn't necessarily automatically upgrade waitlists ahead of departure date, although it should)

If it is waitlisted (R=0) then it goes by what @canadiancow thoroughly answered with.

Prior to the gate:

OYB take priority
Then cabin, status, fare class, time of request

So the OYB fares you mentioned would be higher than the N/M fares prior to the gate. But you explicitly asked about the gate.

Also bear in mind that OYB fares don't need R space - they need P (international) or Z (North America) space.
