UA8 SFO>JFK on Thursday 10/16

I have a Standard Award for C and was offered upgrade to F during OLCI for $440 or so. Declined because I flew with my spouse... and if I had wanted the F I'd just pay the 120000 miles instead of 90000 miles for C.

JPY40100 equals USD 393.
So, you reject at $393 but accept at $315 ? At which level is your turning point ?

I dont think the poster knew the conversion rate.

To tell the truth most people who see 40100 would think it is a lot of money.

do they ask for paid upgrades if people are trying to use swu's on the flight? it seems, to me, tongue in cheek, that if they are not upgrading people like 1k's with swu's then, and asking for paid upgrades, there may be some un-happy campers out there, but i think that being upgraded is a priviledge and not a right, so that the people do not have much to complain, or anything, to complain about. am i correct in this assumption?

NRT>BKK Evening flight and could use two E+ window seat on 777.
BKK>NRT Early morning flight and want to sleep. (Slept at 2am, waked up at 3:30am)
Acutually more than $300 on this segment seemed me expensive.

Well I dont exactly agree with that assumption . IMHO miles and SWUs do have a dollar value to UA. The holders of these upgrade instruments have PAID for them also, by flying the required amount deemed necessary by United. I dont see that paid upgrades are higher priority (or value). So you have someone who ponies up $$ for a paid upgrade and the frequent flyer who spent the whole year (or in some cases, years) putting up cash to fly UA over other airlines to earn those valuable upgrade instruments. Why should SWU or mile upgrades be seen as lower in value than paid upgrades? In many cases the paid upgrades can be offered to the lowest fare types and in some cases SWUs can only be used on W fares or higher (for intl travel) ie not the lowest or cheapest fare buckets avail.

AFAIK, SWUs are higher priority on the waitlist and generally paid upgrades can only be offered after all waitlisted pax are cleared. I may be wrong, but that is my understanding of how the system works .

Buying Day of Departure International Upgrades

I've had some luck buying an international "day of departure" upgrade from coach to business, but they have always been "upgradeable" fares.

Now, I've book a coach ticket to China on a "T" fare.

Do I have any chance of buying an upgrade?

I'm 1K.

They definitely offer UFC for S fares, and I suspect for T fares as well.

Are these upgrades available when checking in on-line 23 hours before the flight, or only the same day at the airport?

depends on the loads. Sometimes it will ask you at OLCI and sometimes you have to ask at the ticketing desk when you check in.
