C--> F A$717
Y -> C A$717
Flight was about 75% full per FA. Horrendous lack of service in C. FAs pretty much ignored the few passengers in C. Pathetic

HKG-SGN anyone?
Have an upcoming HKG-SGN flight in Y (*G so not even E+ seating sadly...) and was curious if anyone has experience with paid upgrades on this 747 flight for 2H30MIN. Would be a shame to fly AC on their 777 across from YVR and then transfer to UA row 50!

It may not always be offered, but you should always ask - I have encountered sevaral times where it wasn't offered, but was available on the asking. Don't know about your specific route, though.

July 4, SFO to FRA: booked in C on a Z fare, bought up to F for $749 when I checked in at the counter.
It took some effort. I wasn't offered the buy-up, so I asked at the counter after using OLCI at home. Initially, the CSR said buy-ups were never available on that route; I said I had done it before and asked her to please check. Then she said it couldn't be done on an upgraded ticket. I pointed out that my ticket hadn't been upgraded. She had one more objection (can't remember what it was), and I again asked her to please check. Finally, she called over a colleague and asked her to check, saying that she didn't know how. The colleague typed a few lines and up it popped!
Friends on the same flight on a separate PNR received and accepted the buy-up from C to F from OLCI. They didn't say how much it cost.

7/18: LAX - MEL on 839 - upgraded Y (W fare) to C for $781
I had to ask, the flight was totally full (empty seats only due to weight limits).

June 17, ORD to PEK: $618 E+ to C. Return on July 17, HKG to ORD, was quoted $820 (MTR terminal agent said price had increased) but then said I and wife were op-upped since the E cabin was overbooked. In fact, lots of lucky first-timers in the C cabin that day. By the way, service was pretty good both directions...going, one of the Western FA's spoke pretty decent Mandarin. That was interesting since the cabin was filled with Com Party men returning home from a meeting and she kept them amused, returning, I commented to one of the FA's while deplaning that the good service was appreciated.

Just got offered KIX-SFO from Y to C for 64400 yen (about $625) through Chicken Online. I declined. Was it a smart move or should I have taken it up?
Update: I got lucky and got my very first op-up, so in the end it turned out OK.

All depends on how much $625 is worth to you and if you sleep easily etc. or have to be able to hit the ground running in SFO. Also depends if you have a descent seat in E+. If it makes you feel better though the flight feels shorter going to SFO.

LHR -> SFO on July 17. C (Z) -> F £409 (about $820) I declined. My threshold of pain is about $600 for this route. C is perfectly adequate for a daytime, non-sleeping, flight. Might have considered it in the opposite direction, or if they were using the new configuration.

No wonder airlines are giving up the F cabin. People seem to not think twice the personal space is worth $800 (or perhaps 50% of the average C-cabin fare).
