20 to 80 is 60 extra (difference between K to RN and K to PZ). Being in PE as an upgrade doesn't count for the "PE to J upgrade" price.

To upgrade a PP fare is 30. The OP's original fare basis is K, needing 80 total. Assume they have to contact UA to undo the PP upgrade, and put in for the PP/Polaris upgrade.

Is this conversion complete as advertised? I had 2 GPU's applied to a booking I made last week and now the booking makes no reference to my WL status and says "this reservation cannot be upgraded." Now my PP balance shows 160 (120 PP expiring in Jan 2020 and 40 expiring in 2021) and "40 requested). Are those "requested" the GPU's that were converted to PP that were applied to the booking? I was 1k for 2019 and because they love moving the goal post, will only make Plat for 2020.

Ahh, I see so at least you now have the option of dumping more point for an upgrade on a lower class fare, in this case K. Basically you can now use what was 2 GPUs. I guess that is cool but especially for those of us who are swimming in points now. Unless I can get a "instant" upgrade I still don't think I will play the wait and see game. For the last couple of years now I have just been purchasing Polaris (ouch) on my international travel but this is indeed a bit of a game changer. Thanks

you might be at risk of losing the confirmed upgrade, but you should be able to have them "swap instruments" to use the points.

I was in a similar boat as you but with a waitlisted MPUA, and when it didnt clear by yesterday I had them refund it. I got a bunch of RPU points and then was able to upgrade it today with this epoints.

It's too late for the OP. The OP paid $500 to upfare to W and spend a GPU -> which means they paiD $500 and spent 40PP. The OP could have waited and paid $0 and spent 80PP, since the OP will not use all of the PP this year, it would have saved $500.

I do not agree. It may work out well for OP if upgrade is cleared with W fare, but not cleared with sub-W fares. The upgrade is based upon status and then fare class (assuming no complication from the upgrade procedure on planes with Premium plus cabin). So, the W fare gives OP a higher chance.

I read it as PZ space being open, so OP spent the $500 to buy up. If that interpretation is correct, there's no guarantee that the PZ space would still have been available today.
