Maybe "married segment" isn't the correct technical term to use here but it gets my point across that the display is a result of both legs being shown together and the availability across both of them.

The segments are not "married"; if they were, you could not upgrade only one of them.

It's the display - either a "feature" or an "error" depending on your perspective.

I have the same situation with flight today GPU cleared from A fare to Polaris and 40 PP taken out. 1K agent told me that after the flight I will get 10 PP returned to my account.

Points were not returned after my flight on Dec. 4 with GPU upgrade. I called 1K desk and agent called MP desk to address this issue. MP Desk resolved the issue by returning 40 points and then deduct 30 points from my account to make this right. In the process all my points now expire 1/31/21 instead of 20 points expiring 1/31/20 (RPU that would expire 1/31/20).

Applied 80 PP to a ticket. Upgrade cleared. Correct amount deducted.

Then I received this unexpected email from United.

What is that?

Dear XXXX,

You may have received a receipt stating that you were charged a PlusPoints upgrade fee. This was an error related to our switch to PlusPoints on Wednesday. Rest assured, we didn’t charge you any dollar amount, and nothing has changed with your account or upgrade request.

We’re sorry for the confusion, and we look forward to seeing you on board soon.

Sincerely,
Your MileagePlus team

No, you're not missing anything. I'm just saying, you can't trust the display, just like you couldn't trust the old, similar display. I promise you that if you bought that ticket in W or K, you'd be able to upgrade into the open PZ.

Well, sure, I know that. Guess what though, 99% of all flyers don’t and UA is tricking them into buying an unnecessarily expensive ticket. I find that quite concerning.
if it didn’t show for any I had much less problems with that!

Referring to emails mistakenly sent out on Wednesday to those who already had GPUs cleared.

Doesn't look like UA can't get this right ... why am I not surprised ...

Applied 20 points for BOS-SFO only but not for SFO-SAN. Checked it afterwards and it shows correctly I am waitlisted for BOS-SFO but NO LONGER eligible for a CPU SFO-SAN! Check it on the flight status page and indeed it is not a display error, I am not on the UG list for SFO-SAN at all anymore

We’d never want to charge you for something you get for free! 😊 Platinum members receive Economy Plus complimentary as a part of their suite of seating benefits. If it’s Economy Plus you desire, you should be able to change your seat on the seat map at no charge. If you have PlusPoints in your account, you should see an option to upgrade your flight using PlusPoints. Hope this helps!

Still a bit confused, I didn't have any Points Plus in my account, but was wondering since I just achieved Platinum status, when do I get the Points Plus associated with this level? I ended up using 20,000 miles to put in a Waitlisted upgrade to EP on my EWR-CDG. If I should get the points in Jan, can I convert my use of miles to the Points Plus?

It took three days to post the PlusPoints after I re-qualified for 1K status. You should call MP to get the PlusPoints posted on your account.

More concerning, I am flying ORD-SFO-AKL-SFO-ORD next week. I applied GPUs at booking. The overwater segments cleared immediately and the domestic segments were waitlisted. As of this morning, the SFO-ORD segment now shows as “CPU eligible.” The “Upgrade cabin” option is available, requesting 20 PlusPoints to waitlist for First (or buy up to First for $533). Another call to the 1K line and the agent said I am still waitlisted, no need to use more points. Who to believe, the agent or the app? The only reason I can think of for the confusion is that my layover at SFO is 17 hours.

Update: I did the time trick and checked the upgrade list for my SFO-ORD segment and I was listed as 9th. This seemed kind of low for a GPU applied weeks ago. So I called the 1K line again. The agent assured me I was on the waitlist but could not explain why all I saw was “CPU eligible” and PlusPoints or money upgrade options. He confirmed my position on the upgrade list. He said he would work on the issue. I checked an hour later and saw the segment was now showed as Waitlisted. I checked the upgrade list and, sure enough, now I’m 3rd. Glad I followed up...

I'm planning to book K ticket LHR-SFO-SYD return to retain Gold status with Aegean

1. In new system I will need 80 Points to upgrade one way for both flights LHR-SFO and SFO-SYD?
2. Is it posible to check if I can upgarde flights using points before buying ticket? I'm quite flexible with dates

Assuming all on UA and not a stopover (but a connection) in SFO, then it will be 40 PlusPoints (which higher UA elites receive) each way if W fare or higher. 80 points if less than W fare (which includes K fare).

You will need to keep your UA MP number on the ticket until you are upgraded or you will be prioritized as a non-UA elite.
What UA status do you have?

Correct. However, you will be charged 80 points even if only one of the two segments clears.

Yes. You want to enable Expert Mode in your UA profile and, searching LHR-SFO and SFO-SYD as stand-alone segments, see if they have inventory in PZ class. Note that UA also flies LHR-LAX-SYD and LHR-IAH-SYD on some days too, as well as LHR-LAX/SFO-MEL.

Flight from IAD-EWR-NRT, waitlisted for the two segments. Can I cancel the upgrade for IAD-EWR only? I notice that it would also be charged 20 plus points for the less-than-one-hr flight, if EWR-NRT not upgraded. ... or I hope to do the Same day change for direct flight from IAD to NRT (is it possible?) I am 1K, any suggestions?

Question on partial itin upgrades. T&C/FAQ seems clear about what happens if you waitlist the whole itin and only the domestic portion clears (you are only charged 20) or if you only initially request the over the pond (TATL/TPAC) section and it clears and then you have to pay more to add the domestic section.

Say at initial request, the TATL portion can clear (PZ>1 and you have W or higher fare class) but the domestic portion is PZ0. If I request upgrade for ALL segments (ie TATL clears) will the domestic portion be waitlisted? Ie, I would receive waitlist priority using Plus points (ie higher than regular CPU but lower than GS and 1K on YBM fares) and not be required to use any more points?

I think the answer is yes but want to confirm.
