1. I understand I automatically upgrade on ORD-SFO since its a B fare. Does my companion too? If not, does it hurt my upgrade chances?

2. Does my 1K status extend to my colleague for the Plus Points? Or would we be way down the Plus Point upgrade list because he has no status?

Your status applies when you are on the same PNR

Upgrade from B to PN does NOT work ORD-SFO unless you split the PNR. You companion can't get that upgrade.

Honestly the best is to split the PNR, apply +Ps for the companion for ORD-SFO-SIN and SFO-SIN for yourself. That way you have the greatest chances of getting the UGs for each segment.

Not quite. Requires PN inventory And there has been a glitch for some that the domestic B on PremPlus may not be a B fare basis, but a B fare class. For more see Y/B/M Premier Instant Upgrade - How does it work?

Believe the companion is not included and you will have to split the PNR to be upgraded

Even if you split the PNR, the companion should retain your status as far as upgrade priority

Thanks everyone...UA seems to make it crystal clear and clear as mud at the same time. I guess I will book the reservation for both of us then split it. Honestly we dont really care about the ORD-SFO leg but want to maximize our chances on the SFO-SIN leg for the upgrade using PP

But it does seem like there is some debate whether my companion with no status would retain my status if I split the PNR...

Believe that is considered a settled issue, they retain the elite's status. There may have been a time it was not 100% but it seems have been straighten out, even for the return. There may be some corner cases, like ticket re-issue after irrops after a split otherwise recent reports have been favorable.

My daughter has my GS status and she’s flying SFO/EWR later this week and is using these Plus Points as a way to UG. Can you increase chance of UG going through by increasing number of these points? TIA

No

Try to cancel a waitlisted PP upgrade but it’s not showing up in PP Upgrades column.

Is calling United the only way to get off waitlist ? Other than making changes to the ticket.

This is frustrating. Anyone has any suggestions?

Quick question, I read the wiki and back a ways, but a lot of posts here. I did get some info from an older post, so checking on any updates.

If I cancel a +P request, can I reapply later? Is there a 'wait period' for re-applying?

I tried to do this a couple weeks ago and even though it would go through the whole 'purchase' process to reapply them, it never showed up in my 'pending upgrades' and going back into the reservation it still gave me the option to request upgrade. Two key points of info there is I THINK I was inside the 24 hour window and checked in at the time, but even if I 're-checked', it wouldnt save the transaction to re-apply the points.
I am just outside the bubble on both flights (#2 with 1 open and #5 with 4 open) and I want to see what the cash upgrade would cost.
I realize I will "lose my place in line" but I just applied them a couple days ago, so probably not a big different.
I also know that there will likely be cancellations that will probably open a few more, but just wanted the general info.

No waiting period. You can actually request more waitlist than you have available PlusPoints. If you run out of PlusPoints but have waitlisted, you will be dropped if you would have been cleared.

It's happening more that PP upgrades don't show up in PP Upgrade page.

The only way to cancel waitlisted PP upgrade is to call.

Anyone else has the same issue?

apologies if this has already been answered but i couldnt see it in the wiki

if a pluspoints upgrade clears into PY for 20 plus points, is it possible to decide later to upgrade into J? If so, how many plus points are charged? will it charge the 60 plus points difference (I am starting on a K fare)? Thanks

I was hoping someone would answer for sure to see if my thoughts were correct.

First... When selecting an upgrade you can select both First and PP. As you know in this case once you get the PP you will waitlist to First. But you pay 40 Plus Points up front.
So if PP is clearing you could cancel your PP upgrade and reapply for both at 40 points.

If you do not want to risk cancelling, I guess you would have to call CS to see if you can apply another 20 PP to get on the wait list for First.

But I would want someone to confirm how best to do it or if you can even apply 20 more points to WL for Frist.

You are confusing me. If you talk about upgrading to Premium Plus cabin and business cabin on EWR-LAX/SFO, both need 20 PPs. If one of the cabins gets cleared, 20 PPs will be deducted. If you talk about connection flights such as MCO-EWR-SFO/LAX, you will only be charged 20 PPs if either flight clears.

Once cleared, you can not cancel the PlusPoint upgrade. You will have to cancel the reservation and start from scratch.

david_oz May 5, 2022 3:59 pm

just to clarify, the route is LAX-SYD-LAX, and I don't want to spend more than 100 plus points on the trip (ie. business class in one direction, premium economy in the other).

I think both flights have a good chance of being upgraded to PY. The outbound flight looks like it has very little chance of being upgraded to J, and the return flight seems to have a good chance. So my first instinct is to apply 20 plus points to waitlist the outbound for PY, and 80 to waitlist the return for PY and J

But what happens if a couple of days before the outbound, I check the reservation and the upgrade list is short and there are lots of empty seats. I guess if the upgrade to PY hasn't cleared then I can just remove it and reapply. But if it has cleared, then what? Is there an option to waitlist for the extra 60 plus points?
