just to clarify, the route is LAX-SYD-LAX, and I don't want to spend more than 100 plus points on the trip (ie. business class in one direction, premium economy in the other).
I think both flights have a good chance of being upgraded to PY. The outbound flight looks like it has very little chance of being upgraded to J, and the return flight seems to have a good chance. So my first instinct is to apply 20 plus points to waitlist the outbound for PY, and 80 to waitlist the return for PY and J But what happens if a couple of days before the outbound, I check the reservation and the upgrade list is short and there are lots of empty seats. I guess if the upgrade to PY hasn't cleared then I can just remove it and reapply. But if it has cleared, then what? Is there an option to waitlist for the extra 60 plus points? To your question, you will have to call CS agent to find it out. You cannot request Polaris and Premium+ cabins on two separate times on web. |
I'm sure that this has already been asked and answered in this thread but it's really long and search doesn't work very well.
If I apply PlusPoints to a domestic (CPU eligible, 2 cabin) flight and it clears, what are my SDC options? Does my SDC move me into F or Y? If I move into Y (if possible) do I get my points back? |

Believe that is considered a settled issue, they retain the elite's status. There may have been a time it was not 100% but it seems have been straighten out, even for the return. There may be some corner cases, like ticket re-issue after irrops after a split otherwise recent reports have been favorable.
(Curiously the system would not let me apply PP to the ORD-SFO leg..it said "not available". I could only apply on the SFO-SIN leg) |

I understand splitting it to help myself upgrade on B fare ORD-SFO since companions do not qualify for instant upgrade. But does splitting also somehow increase our chances of an upgrade on SFO-SIN using PP as well?? ....

it does, because you only need PZ1 to clear 1 of you. With 2 pax on 1 PNR you need PZ2 to clear both ... so that does help, but you could end up with only 1 upgraded in the end.

Trying to understand my success today.
I am 1K and a week ago I applied points to a flight, 2 empty left in J and moved from #7 to #2. I cancelled the +P upgrade yesterday to see how much the cash upgrade would be, and never put them back on. This morning, about 6 hours before departure, still J2 and when I went to apply the points again, the flight showed "One Seat Left". As soon as I applied the points, I got the confirmation that I had been upgraded. I didnt get a chance to look at the buckets before I put it in. It looks like I jumped over #1, because I had been #2 even with +P applied? Is there a fare bucket that would show an "instant confirmation" (PZ?)? I'm assuming it may be a GS (same name is still there) and I just landed at #2 in front of the 1Ks but dont know how I got confirmed at T-6h |
Double waitlisting?
Don't see this on the wiki. Booked EWR-SEA with paid economy and waitlisted for FC with miles. Can I also add Pluspoints upgrade/waitlist? I would prefer to use the latter but how will the system handle this? The wiki says that mileage upgrade and Pluspoints are considered equal.
Thanks! |

i’m very annoyed and confused
I was booked on 363 on 5/10 in PremiumP waitlisted for F. Made a change to 5/12 (couldn’t do this online said there were no flights and it took the phone agent a really long time to complete the change) paid $315 more.
Here’s the thing, i’m unable to list for an upgrade and neither can a phone agent list me for an upgrade using plus points or miles(!) Nothing she could do, ended up on the phone for 2 hours. Maddening, they had no answer they just kept saying a Premium Plus seat is not eligible for upgrade on this route. “The flight you just took me off I was waitlisted for an upgrade, same route” ”I know sir” insane. I gave up. |

Its interesting, when I called the 1K line they told me that if I split the ticket, my companion will lose 1K status. The agent had to look it up but she read something like if a 1K sponsers someone elses upgrade with PP on a separate ticket then that person's status applies. (I tend to believe the experts on this forum over UA agents though!:D)

If you book a flight for someone else, their status applies. If you split a reservation where you were previously together, your status applies.
