GS Qualifying for 2019 Discussion

This will be a discussion thread, for discussing the needed qualifications and timing of notification.
For posing formal notifications (but no discussion), use this thread Global Services 2019 Notifications (ONLY)
2019 GS Timeline
First requal notifications came out on 6 Dec 2018
First-time notifications started about 3 Jan 2019
Numerous reports that all regular notifications will be out by 11 Jan 2019
Initial successful reconsideration appeals reported 15 Jan 2019
First reports of challanges15 Jan 2019
For discussion of GS benefits, please use Consolidated Global Services Thread: Benefits, Questions 2018
For 2017 qualifications, see the 2017 thread and for 2018, see the 2018 thread

To find your PQDs if >than $12K
Go to
MileagePlus activity since my last statement and it is in the "Account summary" table at the top of the page.

Note this is not just the UA operated PQDs (which is commonly believed to be what matters for GS) but rather your total PQDs.

Definitions

BIS is actual scheduled flight distance (Great Circle Mileage Distance -- GCM) between airports with 500 mile minimum for elites. This is the standard used for Lifetime miles also. Those flying mostly sub-500 segments sometimes prefer to not use the minimum rule.

The definition for CPM is a bit vaguer, especially since CPM is used in multiple different situations.

Believe for the purpose of this thread, GS qualification, folks are using

PQD CPM = UA PQDs / UA BIS

Note there is no direct evidence UA uses this CPM number for GS Qualification but it is a number FTers like to use.

As for BIS, UA does not report this number your account and it needs to be manually tracked.

One way is to make use that PQMs are based on BIS but there may be a multiplier / bonus for high end fares. If always in 2x PQMs, you could divide by 2 to get BIS.

rwsteelers had a good method for determining UA BIS -- the change in Lifetime Miles from the first of the year.

Similar spreadsheets were created in years past, so I'm hoping to continue this tradition. Please take the time to enter your stats into the spreadsheet. Many thanks

Great question. Here is how to calculate your 3 year running average:

1) Login to United.com
2) from the home page click on Mileage plus > My Account
3) Click the arrow next to "Balances & Status" then click "Recent Activity"
4) Look for the box "Select Activity Period". Then click the arrow next to it
5) You should then have a drop down box with the activity period. Mine goes all the way back to 2012.
6) Copy and paste the outputs into a spreadsheet. The column you want is the PQD. Then once you have all of the past 3 years, simply run the average function across the columns you're interested in.

For the data table being compiled:

2015: $64K PQD / 320K PQM / 130K BIS (went from 1K to GS in Jan 2016) - DEN based

2016: $49K PQD / 185K PQM / 110K BIS (requalified for GS for 2017) - DEN based

2017: $26K PQD / 140K PQM / 100K BIS (GS to 1K for 2018) - DEN based

2018: $52K PQD / 230K PQM / 140K BIS (1K to GS for 2019) - DEN based but moved to Orlando MCO late 2018

Hope this helps.

Just an IT glitch.. will sort itself out, and I'm not worried one bit about it (mine is showing the same conundrum).

The site just updated as 1K this morning.

175k PQM
35 PQS segments
$46K PQD

Ewr based.

All mostly international business to Europe, Tokyo, Australia etc.

Plus a ton of other miles and dollars spent in addition on partner airlines.

Was 1k for last two years and thought this year was shoe in for GS. Especially after last poster with lower stats.
I would send in an appeal.

There will be more qualifications trickling through in the next 1-2 weeks, so bear that in mind too.

I'll post more detailed analysis after the Jan 11th date passes. Hopefully we'll have some more data by then. In the meantime for others who have not posted your stats on the Google docs, please do so. See below for the links:
Sorry I forgot to include that I'm (toddt) a first time qualifier) with 119 segments.

thanks!

2017: PQD: $69,187; PQM: 150,141
2016: PQD: $40,127; PQM: 164,504

So including 2018 (posted above), my 3 year running average would be: PQD: $46k, PQM: 144k

This is awesome, thanks for doing this. Can you add another pivot table based on domestic / international home airports?

Hello flyerbjorn: Absolutely, thanks so much for the suggestion. I do have a pivot table with the home airports, but it shows only the mean/min/max PQD. Is this what you had in mind?? If so click on the spreadsheet tab labelled "Pivot1". If this is not what you had in mind, let me know and I can probably create something. Open to all suggestions....

I'd create another pivot tab and deduct the us-based / international information from the home airport name. There's got to be some easy way to do that. Happy to help if you can't find it.

Sure I can do this. Just want to make sure I understand. Sounds like you want another variable that denotes whether a person's home airport is US vs International?? And then to have separate charts comparing domestic vs international qualification metrics? Is this correct?

Note that of the approx 250 responses, only 4 were international. So it might be difficult to draw conclusions from such a small sample size:

1 MUC
1 PEK
1 SYD
1 DEN/MEL

I am still seeing "check back on the 11th" regarding GS renewal. Are others seeing that as well?

Is it the norm to find that you've made it to GS via status updates on app/website? I thought i remembered someone saying they called you to welcome you.

Is this the first person we've seen qualify as a primary Y flier? I'm curious how you spend $45k on Y tix? At $1k/roundtrip, that's 45 trips in a year...?

Pretty sure it's possible to spend a lot more than $1,000 on a TLV-SFO round-trip

Last year I spent $66K on 100% Y trips. For example, a one-way from NRT to DEN is around $4K.

My wife has been GS for three or four years now, and has never received a call or an email.
