Now even more ways to fly across the Atlantic
-- Atlantic Joint Venture offering with Air Canada and Lufthansa Group
New ways to fly across the Atlantic Effective June 5, 2018, United Airlines in line with Atlantic Joint Venture partners Air Canada and Lufthansa Group, will introduce a new fare option in select trans-Atlantic markets.

Created for our customers who may be more price-sensitive, these lowest-priced fares are the first step towards a Basic Economy product on trans-Atlantic United flights. The fare includes the same inflight experience as standard United Economy but with important restrictions that you'll want to review carefully before booking.
What is the new fare option?
For customers traveling between the United States or Canada and select European countries in specific lower Economy booking classes, the new fare option will not include a complimentary first checked baggage allowance, upgrades or the ability to make changes following purchase.
Customers purchasing this fare for travel ticketed and operated on United will be eligible for advance seat assignments, one standard carry-on bag and one personal item, and the same United Economy cabin experience and services, including dining options, Wi-Fi for purchase and inflight entertainment.

What date is the fare option applicable?
The fare option is applicable for first ticket and first travel date on or after June 5, 2018, for all points of sale. The first bag fee does not apply to tickets purchased before June 4, 2018
.
How is the fare option identified?
For all Atlantic joint venture carriers, the last 3 characters of the fare basis code will be -LGT, and the fare type code is ERU/EOU.
For point of origin U. S. the fare is planned for booking classes K , L and T.
For point of origin E.U. and Canada, the fare is planned for booking classes K, L, T, S and W. Booking classes are subject to change and may vary by route.
The fares will vary from market to market and depend on availability. Customers traveling between the U.S. or Canada and Europe will be able to see if this fare is available on their flight when booking.

What are the conditions of the new fare option?
The new fare has some important restrictions compared to a standard United Economy ticket:
• The fare does not include a free baggage allowance for checked baggage.
• The fare is non-refundable and non-changeable except as stated in the United 24-hour flexible booking policy.
• The fare cannot be combined with any other fare type.
• The fare is not eligible for upgrades to a premium cabin (complimentary, purchased or instrument).
Are there any exemptions from the first bag fee?
The following customers are exempt from the fee when checking in with United and traveling on United or United Express for the first segment of a trans-Atlantic itinerary:
• MileagePlus Premier members
• Chase MileagePlus cardholders
• Members of the U.S. military
• Star Alliance Gold members
Will earn 50% PQMs, 100% PQDs, RDMs, Lifetime miles and segment credit toward 4 UA segments needed for elite status
-- BE and TATL BE earns will be the same
BE uses N fares, TATL BE / -LGT can be a number of the lower discount economy fare classes
No changes -- dates, fare class, truly non-refundable ... and no upgrades
Other -LGT restrictions
Normal TATL fares include a free check bag -- -LGT fares do not for non-elites / non-credit card holders
No Premier seating benefits - i.e., no free Economy Plus

Didn't United just introduced a First Bag Charged/No Changes Allowed fare from Europe. I can book that fare if I want from CDG-ORD-CDG.

Sorry, I may have misread and this is not a BE fare but it does have constraints that are like BE.

Yes, this thread -- but it isn't Basic Economy

But it does not have many of the BE constraints like -- non-PQM/PQD earning or unable to select seat assignments or unable to access E+. So significant differences.

You're right - this is one of those new Light Economy fares in T fare class. Reading the above it looks like I still get my standard baggage allowances on the way home since the originating flight is United. However, on the way out, we stopover in Frankfurt and then switch to a United plane. That's the leg that shows I have to pay $60... not sure how to read the Lufthansa page that is granting an exception for *G for their Economy Light TATL flights.

You are flying on a fare with an underlying allowance of zero bags, and all the other normal rules apply.

As a UA 1K, you will receive 3x 70lbs at a UA counter. As a UA*G, you will receive 1x 23kg at an LH counter. As you noted, the latter is "for now" -- there is a looming trend of airlines refusing to honor the *G baggage allowance on zero-bag fares, but LH is not there.. yet.

In my case, I will check in at a SAS counter doing check-in on behalf of Lufthansa. I wonder if they'll honor the *G free first bag on the Lufthansa connecting to the United flight. Anyone with experience?

Supposing the United leg and Lufthansa leg are on the same ticket then I believe the most liberal (i.e. UA) bag policies apply for the entire journey. In this case we would have:
  • 2 bags for *A Gold (1 complimentary bag + 1 additional bag per *A Gold)
  • 3 bags for UA Gold or better
On a side note, a trick some flyers have mentioned works at increasing the bag allowance is simply upgrading a domestic leg of an international flight which can often cost a trivial amount of money (i.e. $50 for a short leg like EWR -> IAD) since the baggage rules that would apply for the entire itinerary would be the rules on that first class segment.

If the tickets were purchased separately then the bag policies of each ticket apply individually (i.e. LH rules on first ticket then UA rules on next ticket).

“Most liberal” is never the rule. The rule, for itineraries that touch the US, is “at least as liberal as the first marketing carrier, ignoring special exceptions like frequent-flyer status.”

Furthemore, UA is now selling, and OP appears to have purchased, a fare with a zero TATL luggage allowance. I would expect the allowance to be the UA Gold allowance of 3 bags at 32 kg / 70 lbs on the way out, and the *G allowance of 1 bag at 23 kg on the way back, because the base allowance in the fare is zero.

Even with the application of the DoT rules, UA elite benefits do not apply unless checking in with UA. And *G benefits will depend on the carrier you are checking in with. Elites benefits are not covered by the DOT rules, only ticket benefits.

Is the flight operated by Lufthansa (LH metal)? If so, then the LH rules (1x 23kg) should apply. If the flight is operated by SK, you may be out of luck as SK does not waive any baggage fees for *G on a zero-baggage fare (as of 7 May).

Hey everyone,

It's United ticket stock (016) with the following itinerary:
Outbound
GOT-FRA (UA flight number on Lufthansa metal, check-in desk staffed by SAS)
FRA-SFO (United metal)

Return
SFO-FRA (United metal)
FRA-ARN (Lufthansa metal)

I have no concerns with the baggage allowance on the return since I'll check in at a United desk and I'll get all of my baggage allowance as normal. It's the outbound I'm a bit worried about - not sure if they'll honor this as an *A flying an Economy Light fare (since the TATL is operated by United and not Lufthansa) or if they'll see this as an intra-Europe flight with 0 baggage allownace as referenced here under "Free baggage allowance rules for status customers on flights within Europe (4)". Adding to the confusion, if you read further on the page, under "Baggage regulations for checked baggage on journeys operated by several airlines", it says:
When booking a journey with several airlines, the baggage regulations which apply are those of the airline which flies the most significant leg of the journey (usually the longest stretch geographically), and under whose flight number this leg has been booked. For these purposes it is irrelevant which airline actually operates the flight. The baggage regulations apply in each case up until the moment you break the journey for more than 24 hours (Stopover).
Example: you have booked a round-trip flight from Vienna to Johannesburg with connections in Munich and Frankfurt.
Your outbound flight:
From Vienna to Munich with flight number OS 115 (OS = Austrian Airlines), operated by Austrian Airlines.
Continue without a stopover from Munich to Johannesburg with flight number LH 9542 (LH = Lufthansa), operated by South African Airways.

The baggage regulations for your outbound flight therefore comply with Lufthansa’s baggage regulations.

Your return flight:
From Johannesburg to Frankfurt with flight number SA 7573 (SA = South African Airways), operated by Lufthansa.
Continue without a stopover from Frankfurt to Vienna with flight number OS 7260 (OS = Austrian Airlines), operated by Lufthansa.

The baggage regulations for your return flight therefore comply with South African Airways’ baggage regulations.
Based on this, since my outbound Lufthansa-operated intra-Europe flight has a UA flight number, I'd assume that the United baggage regulations (i.e. 3 bags for a 1K) apply and not the 1 bag *A rule for Lufthansa Economy Light fares. Not sure what to think anymore!

For a flight to/from the US, the only thing that matters is the marketing carrier of the first segment. In this case, that’s UA. The fact that SAS staffs the desk won’t matter; they’re acting (directly) as LH agents and (indirectly) as UA agents. Think of them as subcontractors.

Your baggage allowance will be the UA TATL allowance from GOT to SFO...

... but this part is incorrect. “3 bags for a 1K” only applies when checking in with UA. Instead, you should get UA’s non-status TATL allowance — 0 bags on this fare — plus 1 bag at 23 kg for *G (LH policy for TATL *G travel).

Incidentally, what does it say on your receipt?

I don't follow - why would I get UA's non-status TATL allowance? Is it because I'm checking in via LH?

Precisely. The 1K baggage waiver is only applicable when checking in via UA.

Good tip - and for me, paying $60 isn't that big of a deal given how much we saved on the fare. $800 for two people! I'd rather avoid it of course hence the questions and applicability of the different waivers that should be in place.

Will do - the trip isn't for a while though but I will plan to update the thread.

I managed to rebook the ticket (leveraging the 24H cancellation policy) for even cheaper ($380 round trip per person), believe it or not. It's now an L fare on the outbound and a T fare on the inbound. It's still called an "Economy (first bag charge/no changes allowed)" fare on the reservation, but now the baggage fee is no longer showing up in the reservation.



However, the receipt still shows a $60 fee.
