Along with KirkwoodJ, I would also say that in addition to being mentioned above, SFO also seems to be the 77w hub with LAX seeing the 787s.

So SFO - SYD seems like a great pick over LAX - SYD first!

That probably wraps up W17 77W schedule. 8 long-hauls with 1 (or 0) domestic using 14 aircrafts. SFO-PEK-SFO becomes a quick turn for better 77W utilization.

Could be utilization? SFO - AKL is a relatively short flight plus the NZ/UA JV means the capacity risk is shared.

Likely UA felt the present 789's were a better fit for a different route.

It is never a one route decision -- it is how to best use all the aircraft you have to cover all the routes you want to service. Looking at an inidivual route is only looking at part of the situation.

25 hours RT?? There are only a handful of other longer routes.

Agreed about the winter schedule - although AKL and TPE are seasonal, LHR takes over after TPE, so I would assume we would hear about a route starting up in March that takes over AKL fairly soon.

Given SFO-TPE was a 747, the direct swap made some sense. But eventually they can right-size capacity on that route, for which the 747 and 77W may be too much.

SFO-TPE wasn't that difficult an upgrade when it was a 789. Perhaps the Y demand justifies the larger aircraft.

I'm really surprised at AKL. I would have expected SYD before that. Or EWR-HKG.

I wouldn't have thought of a 12.5 hour flight as relatively short

Larger aircraft, yet... but 10-abreast on a 13 or 14-hour nonstop is just brutal.. even for slim passengers.
