I think UA can eliminate the EWR-SFO positioning flights with the introduction of EWR-NRT operated by the 77W but that would mean ~6 hours on the ground in a TLV-EWR-NRT routing.

The 77W will route EWR-TLV-EWR-NRT-SFO-NRT-EWR-TLV-EWR-NRT-SFO etc. Also don't forget the 772s flying EWR-Asia sit on the ground in EWR several hours already.

Looking to do FRA - SFO June 2018 in I class. With just a single flight a day, am I dreaming that I could get a Business Saver Award on the flight?

Do you have your heart set on UA metal? LH releases significantly more TATL Saver J awards than UA does, though the West Coast is the toughest to snag. But with this much time to plan, you should be able to find something fairly easily on LH.

thanks for the reply, RB.
I am willing to fly LH...
I am not too familiar with star alliance saver awards tickets. I tried looking on LH but since I only have 500 miles with them, I can see flight/award availability. I must be doing something wrong. I do see some segments on LH through UA.

As RandomBaritone notes, you're much more likely to find space to SFO on LH (or LX). These options will display when you search for awards on united.com.
