Cathay has done the math and is going 10 across on its 777 fleet

Hypothetically, by the time 744s are fully retire from the scheduled flights, UA at least will already have a small fleet of 772s fitt d with Polaris cabin/.

Under the current plan, none of the 772s will be fitted with Polaris cabins when the 744s are retired.
Zodiac is having enough trouble delivering seats for new 77Ws , and I am certain all manufacturing efforts are directed at getting interiors for these birds first before retrofits begin. At the same time, swapping a sUA 772 with a 77W is a huge capacity jump, so replacing 747 with 77W probably makes more sense in most cases. Exceptions might be former 747 routes like ORD-NRT/HKG that are 777s now, or SFO-SYD. Still, the 77Ws should be pretty well occupied by replacing most of the current slate of 744 flying.

FWIW, Air India is reporting a material increase in bookings and average fares on its US-bound flights due to the infamous electronics ban, so maybe UA might reconsider backing off its initial (rumored) plans to put the 77W on EWR-India flights.

Let's hope they put it on SFO-SYD soon as I am flying that route this summer

So what do you think factors into the decisions where to put Polaris/773?

US-Australia is a big $$$ seat.. but UA does not have huge issues filling the 787-9s.. most times I have flow they clear ~3-6 upgrades and rarely non-revs (non-revs must hate the 787s as no front cabin to clear into).

Its funny with all the argy-bargy over the electronics ban, for me Polaris would seem ideal for US-Middle east in order to compete with Emirates et al..

As I understand it, if UA were to fly to any of the listed airports in the Middle East (which currently no US airline does), then the electronics ban would equally apply to UA on those flights.

Correct. The ban does not impact any US airlines because the ban is against airports that no US carriers fly to, not because they are US airlines.

What about Polaris would be a more effective competitor against the ME3 than the previous IPTE was, a competition UA clearly conceded by pulling the Dubai flights?

Conceded? They lost the gov. contract to JetBlue/EK, and it was a nice screw off, "get ready for what's next", to Dubai/EK.

The US3 are clearly getting what they want out of the new administration, and it's interesting to watch. We'll see what happens, we'll see.

If the United flight was viable only because of a government contract, then it wasn't viable commercially, or even on the terms that United (and US3) insist the ME3 compete - i.e., without subsidy.

Regardless, the question remains -whatever the reason UA couldn't be financially successful with its DXB route, what about Polaris changes that? Polaris certainly won't make it more likely to win back the government contract.

3 UA 77W's now put into short term storage... obviously because of the seat issues. Looks like 5 is all they are getting until this is sorted!

Wow, this is not a good sign so early on into the Polaris program. Who wants to start a pool on if/how soon UA will have to pull an AA and switch to a seat that can deliver?

That's several weeks later than the date previously announced by Routes online.

So looks like I'll still have the 744 on June 7.
