MCT for EWR (2012)

https://www.newarkairport.com/at-airport/connecting-flights

United Airlines operates an "air side" shuttle bus between Terminals A and C from 4:00AM to 12:00AM (midnight). In addition, United also operates a shuttle bus connecting Terminals A and C to terminal B (pier 3, used by Star Alliance carriers) from 1:00PM to 11:00PM, but not in the opposite direction (shuttle does not board at Terminal B). The shuttle bus is available at gate A28 and C70 as illustrated in the image above. The shuttle drops off passengers at the terminal B through the service entry, that requires walking up 2 flights of stairs - there is no elevator. Only the front bus doors will open for alighting at terminal B.This service is free and you will not have to go through TSA security again. Please note this shuttle is operated at the sole responsibility of United Airlines and is subject to modification at their discretion.

(UA3434 connecting to UA1165). The connection time is only 30 minutes. I followed the DCA-EWR flight UA3434 and for the past week it is late almost everyday and I would never make the connection if the flight were even slightly late. I am surprised UA sold this itinerary wth such a tight connection.

I am also concerned that the EWR-LAX flights often seem sold out in business and even if one were available I'd have to overnight in EWR as flight UA1165 is the last flight of the day to LAX). The ticket I purchased is in business class (not flexible fare otherwise I'd just change) and I am *G (non UA) if that means anything.

Any experiences with having UA switch flights ahead of time with such a short connection (e.g. an earlier DCA-EWR flight)? Also, if I missed the connection would they try and put me on whatever is available including connecting flights with the recliner seats vs the premium nonstop transcon product or would I be able to hold out and ask for the premium product?

Many thanks!
The Minimum Connection Time at EWR for a UA-UA transfer without a change of terminal is 30 minutes. That doesn't mean you're likely to make your flight -- you're not, unless everything goes perfectly -- just that UA will rebook you if you misconnect.

If you do miss your flight, you can ask for the nonstop instead of a connecting flight; without asking, which one you'd get depends more on the agent than anything else. As you say, though, there's no guarantee that there will be a seat available on EWR-LAX the next day.

UA isn't under any particular obligation to rebook you, although if you ask nicely you may find a willing agent. On the day of departure, you can do a same-day confirmed change for $75 (anecdotally, that fee may be waived for *G, but it's not an official benefit) -- but that requires inventory to change into. Alternatively, you can stand by for an earlier DCA-EWR flight. You're likely to end up in coach if you do so, but at least you'll get to EWR in time for your flight.

Thanks for this. At the least, I'll try and standby as the DCA-EWR flights look habitually late. It also seems these flights would often have a bus gate or land in a different area than the gates for the connecting flight to LAX.

Is DCA-EWR guaranteed to arrive C these days? I've definitely departed on EWR-DCA from A.

I don't know that there are any guarantees about A vs C. It's possible that this may become an illegal connection on the day of travel if DCA-EWR is assigned to an A gate arrival. I suppose, at that point, you could get a positive-space rerouting by calling, assuming you can find an open seat. (If nothing else, it's worth checking the flight status on this, because if it shows an A gate, you should be able to leverage that to get confirmed on the earlier DCA-EWR flight instead of standing by for it).

On a good day, yes, but the YOW-EWR flight is sometimes very (hours) late.

The good news is that if it looks like you are going to miss the connection, the agents at YOW should be able to reroute you on an Air Canada flight.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense because it doesn’t seem like it is a guaranteed gate.

In addition to everything others have said, worth noting that the ~10:15pm IAD-SFO (UA225) has consistently been a 752 with lieflats since the start of 2018, in a surprising (and pleasant) change. I presume it'll be apparent by about 7:45pm from DCA whether you can or can't make the connection at EWR, at which point requesting IAD-SFO-(overnight)-LAX seems easy to me. (Obviously you have to deal with 1:30-6am at SFO, but presuming you get stuck at EWR because of weather you'd be in the same boat there too.)

I *think* I've also seen a 752 service the similarly late IAD-LAX recently but I believe that's less consistent. Obviously that would be optimal if it exists. What date are you flying?

Finally, I have never had serious problems connecting on the east coast flying tcon in the late evening. Schedules by 8pm are lighter ex-WAS, and because aircraft are all flying inbound from other places (rather than waiting on the ground overnight, like in the morning) it's easy to see when planes will inevitably be late and then call in to fix your reservation preemptively.

Thanks a lot, really helpful answers (as usual) on the UA forum. I was mistaken about my flight date, its actually on 3/9. Just out of curiosity I started tracking UA 3434 which is almost always an hour to several hours late landing in EWR. I will definitely keep these options in mind on the day of travel and appreciate the help all!

Its been a long time since I've been to EWR. Flying LAX-EWR-DCA in J/F. Flight is arriving in C and departing in A. I have 1H 40M to transit. Do I have time to visit Classified?

If that is 1 hour 40 minutes between scheduled landing and scheduled departure, that will be cutting it close, considering boarding time and the bus transfer. I wouldn't attempt it, but I have no interest in Classified/OTG anyway. Count on the bus taking 20-25 minutes, to accommodate for wait time for bus departure etc.

Thanks for the info. Taxiing now at LAX. 20 minutes late, but with winds still arriving 20 minutes early. I’ll see how I feel on landing.

Far from guaranteed. You can take a guess based on plane type. 4/8 of DCA-EWR are on ERJ45 these days, and those are more likely than not (4/4 today) to be at A whereas the others are likely but not guaranteed to be at C.

I chickened out and didn't go. I arrived into EWR on schedule and I still think I would have had enough time if I was more familiar with EWR. However, C has been renovated, has odd intersecting angles and the signage seems confusing. It's been a long time since I've been to the airport and I felt like I was wasting time trying to navigate the terminal. I was close to the transfer gate and hopped on since there was no line. The drive to A was quite short overall and I camped out at a mostly empty UC until boarding.
