Consolidated Connection time/logistics-Domestic & International at EWR {Archive}

Hello. Coming in intl to EWR at 5:15 PM. Right now I overnight and go out next morning. I may change to a connection which departs EWR at 6:30 PM. May have to collect and recheck a bag. Have Global Entry. Will be in BF coming in and most likely E+ going out. Can I make the connection without killing myself? This is one huge airport. Thanks.

What flight are you coming in on? Whether it arrives in terminal B or C will make a fairly big difference, as that will add another 10 minutes to the transfer. You can often predict the arrival terminal by looking at the recent history of the flight.

With GE and without bags checked I'd say it's fairly possible. With a bag checked it is very risky.

Not to mention that it can take forever to get a checked bag at EWR.

Are you arriving from a pre-clearance station? If so, you are functionally making a domestic connection because you will have pre-cleared. If not, this is too tight even wuthout luggage. With luggage, it's likely you will miss the bag check cutoff even if you can physically make it to the gate.

Problem is these days that with capacity cuts, it's more than possible that the flight the next AM will be sold out. So no guarantee that if you miss your connection, you will be back on the originally-booked flight.

This is a highly dicey proposition IMHO, even with GE because you will still likely have to stand around a while waiting for your bag. If this were my situation, I would probably keep myself confirmed on the morning flight and attempt to standby at the gate for the earlier flight if I can get there before it departs.

You should PM the moderator who changed your thread title - it's not a 45min connection

I agree, it's going to be tight. I can be in the United Club by C terminal security in about 10 to 15 minutes after landing in BC using GE and carry-on. But if you have to wait for a bag, very risky for 45 minutes, a possibility for 1 hour 15 minutes. Make sure you get Priority tags on your bags, but they don't do much good at EWR sadly.

I agree with others, stay booked on the AM flight and take your chances of getting on the evening flight, although now you need to get your bag tag changed which will take a lot of time.

What I often do on a long Int. flight is check my flight status on UA.com on my phone close to departure time. Normally the pilot has figured up ATC holds, tail or head wind etc. at that point and updated the arrival time. Many times the long hauls are early which in your case is a plus. If it looks like you're going to be getting in 20 or so minutes early, I would roll the dice and switch to the earlier flight before departure.

Bottom line, this is EXACTLY why I never check baggage, even on a two week Asia trip, that's what hotel laundry is for...lol.

INTL Connection time in EWR from EZE to SFO

I am scheduled on the new service from EZE to EWR connecting on to SFO arriving Monday April 9th at 6:13AM in EWR with a 8:30 AM departure to SFO. I will be in first on the EZE to EWR flight, but traveling with a companion that does not have Global Entry. Any insight to the time necessary to make this transfer (what is the difference in time required if we arrive at terminal B vs C) with the connection departing out of terminal C? Do I need to re-clear security if connecting from terminal B to C?

Thanks for any insight.

Yes, you have to clear security no matter what as you're going to clear immigration in EWR and be land-side when you do.

That connection is possible but you come in after the DEL, BOM and TLV flights, I believe, so no guarantees. If you miss it they'll book you the next available seat to SFO.

Maybe a 10 minute difference arriving in B versus C, probably less. Just take the AirTrain over one stop.

Is it established what the minimum connect time is in this case? I recently had a topic about a Haitian family friend who was booked with 1 hr. 10 at EWR, so it apparently was allowed, although some people here throught the MCT was 1:30. For those who remember that topic, we got his connect time changed to 2:40, and he got through immigration without too much trouble, but probably wouldn't have made it in 1:10.

Last December we flew MAN-EWR-LAS. Our flight was an hour late arriving and landed at 1pm leaving us exactly one hour from touchdown to the departure of our LAS flight.

For a change there was no queue at passport control and we breezed through. We had to collect one checked bag which we were taking with us on the next flight. Our bag arrived at 1:25 and we dashed for the Airtrain to take us from B to C.

The nearest security line is non-elite but it was light and folks kindly let us go ahead of them. Naturally, the gate couldn't be much further away - 114 or 115 IIRC. It was almost 13:50 when we got to the gate - wheezing and gasping for breath. The GA's were looking down the concourse trying to determine if their two missing passengers were on their way. The fact that we were in first might have helped but I was expecting the doors to close at 13:45.

So, 75 minutes with a bag shouldn't be a problem. 45 minutes? Good luck, you'll need it

Don't forget, GRU arrives right around that time too, it's always a scramble on who gets in line first depending on who lands first...lol.

Have you seen the bags on the DEL and BOM flights, oh my, how much can you pack, you could give them all free tickets and UA would still make oodles on the luggage fees....lol.

Where are you coming in from?

A rough guide is:

B Arrivals:

London, other UK Cities, Paris, Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Haiti, France, any 900-series flights (on former UA metal), and 299 (also on former United Metal)

C Arrivals:

Japan, China, Hong Kong, India, TelAviv, Other Europe, Non-PreCleared Canada

Thats just off the top of my head, I am probably missing something, but its a rough guide to go by. If you tell me your flight, I can tell you how it has trended over thr last 8 months.

Also, be advised, as of today, all former UA mainline flights still operate out of Terminal A. These would be flight numbers from 100-999, operating EWR-a traditional UA HUB city. Flight numbers 1-199, 1000-1999 would operate out of C, 3000-4999 would be express flights out of A or C

The UA-UA International to Domestic connection time ia listed as 1:10 for a Terminal C to Terminal C connection, 1:25 fot a Terminal B to Terminal A or C connection.

Also, baggage recheck will not accept baggage after T-30, so keep that in mind as well.
