MCT for EWR (2012)

https://www.newarkairport.com/at-airport/connecting-flights

United Airlines operates an "air side" shuttle bus between Terminals A and C from 4:00AM to 12:00AM (midnight). In addition, United also operates a shuttle bus connecting Terminals A and C to terminal B (pier 3, used by Star Alliance carriers) from 1:00PM to 11:00PM, but not in the opposite direction (shuttle does not board at Terminal B). The shuttle bus is available at gate A28 and C70 as illustrated in the image above. The shuttle drops off passengers at the terminal B through the service entry, that requires walking up 2 flights of stairs - there is no elevator. Only the front bus doors will open for alighting at terminal B.This service is free and you will not have to go through TSA security again. Please note this shuttle is operated at the sole responsibility of United Airlines and is subject to modification at their discretion.

Absolutely enough time. Only concern would be flying UX into EWR, as they get hit by delays first. That said, if the domestic leg is mainline, you will have plenty of time at 95 minutes.

Thanks! Yes they are both mainline, although the domestic leg (UA634) seems notorious for delays.

Although from further reading, there's no need to go through security again. Am I correct on this or has this been changed?

Assuming there's no need of security, from the map it seems to be a 10-15min walk?

Depending on your walking speed -- 20 minutes worst case or most would be safe.

Also, remember you need to be at the gate at least 15 minutes before departure.

Way more than enough time. Even if you had to transfer between terminals A/B/C, that’s still plenty of time. There’s an airside shuttle that takes you between terminals.

If it’s all within terminal C, it’s even easier. No worries! Plenty of time to even stop for a meal.

One hour and ten minute transfer in Newark ??

Flying BWI to ORD to PEK in late March.

Had a perfect schedule with 2 hour layover in ORD, then UA changed it...

Now, it is BWI to Newark in Embrauer regional jet with one hour, ten minute layover midday in Newark to make plane to PEK. Even if it's a different terminal, I would guess that I can do this, but not sure about luggage.

There is a different routing, BWI - ORD - PEK but the layover is now 4 hours. Yes, I have been to the Polaris Lounge and it's nice... My bigger concern is that tight Newark connection.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Which arrival terminal at EWR? Some flights from BWI arrive at Terminal A; others Terminal C.

If Terminal C, plenty of time. I have once connected there with less than 20 minutes. If Terminal A, still doable, IMO. Do you have TSA Pre-Check, or UA Premier Access?

If you land in term A, there is a bus to take you to C and you don't have to re clear security. I have made a 35 min connection before.

70 minutes is doable pretty easily.

If it was me, my biggest worry should be the regional jet from BWI at that time of year - or really any time of year....especially if it is commute air? Mesa, I would worry less about

I have a personal rule: I will not book a connection through EWR that is under 2 hours. Ever. EWR is just too delay-prone - a puff of wind or drop of rain and the delays pile up. Add the fact that this connection is to a once-a-day international flight doesn’t help the EWR case, IME, since if you miss that, your options are going to be pretty limited to the next day (or perhaps with a. Connection via NRT). 70 minutes at EWR will be fine if you are on time. But that’s a bigger if than at ORD. The ORD gives you plenty of buffer for delays, but given it won’t be an ERJ, it will be less likely anyway.

I also personally don’t mind spending a little longer at ORD. Even lounges aside, the food options are much much better, IME - you can’t beat lunch at Frontera’s - at pretty much any airport, but the monopoly OTG options at EWR are absolutely horrible and way overpriced, even by airport standards.

I think yiu you understand what my choice would be. YMMV, of course.

Why did UA change it? Can you change it back or is there a flight cancellation or schedule change? Ih 10 mins is plenty for domestic to international transfer at EWR but the problem is that assumes no delays on the inbound. If delays then could be tight.

I'd take advantage of the schedule change and do IAD-PEK. No concern about misconnects. As painful as it is to get from BWI to IAD, it's better than a double connection.

Are you on the BWI-EWR 7AM flight in the morning?

There may be an Air China flight leaving at 2:55 pm if you misconnect at EWR. The Air China flight may not be available every day. So, check this possibility before making a final decision. Good luck.

Embraer Not Enjoyable

I live in Nashville and after 4 legs with the tiny Embraer jets that are the only UA option ex BNA for international connections (2 lengthy delays, 1 cancellation in EWR due to snow) I now just book UA from the hubs and use Southwest to get there. Much more reliable. I realize there is a downside using unconnected flights, but it beats the Embraer Experience in my book. On the cancelled flight (a real let down after flying Business back from Dublin), we stood by for a 6 am flight the next morning. Last two on board BUT no room for our luggage. So another trip back to the airport at 3. The DUB - EWR flight was about 7 hours. EWR - BNA took us and our luggage 28 hours. Never again!

I'd say if it is before noon you should be ok. The ATC delays generally don't start until the afternoon. Express flights arrive at A or C so you may have to transfer terminals. The bus takes about 5-10 minutes.

I walked by the transfer bus gate around C70 a few days ago. It looks to be closed for renovation. Heard a similar thing when asking in Terminal B about 3 weeks ago, but had chalked it up to there being a Terminal B specific thing. Anyone else confirm the A & C stops are closed for now? That will change calculus if you arrive into A.
