MCT for EWR (2012)
https://www.newarkairport.com/at-airport/connecting-flights
United Airlines operates an "air side" shuttle bus between Terminals A and C from 4:00AM to 12:00AM (midnight). In addition, United also operates a shuttle bus connecting Terminals A and C to terminal B (pier 3, used by Star Alliance carriers) from 1:00PM to 11:00PM, but not in the opposite direction (shuttle does not board at Terminal B). The shuttle bus is available at gate A28 and C70 as illustrated in the image above. The shuttle drops off passengers at the terminal B through the service entry, that requires walking up 2 flights of stairs - there is no elevator. Only the front bus doors will open for alighting at terminal B.This service is free and you will not have to go through TSA security again. Please note this shuttle is operated at the sole responsibility of United Airlines and is subject to modification at their discretion.

Is this lounge actually open? Would it happen to be an arrivals lounge too? Would it be a viable option for hanging out after arriving BOS-EWR on United and before a TAP J EWR-LIS 5:40 am flight (separate tickets)?
New United Club in EWR

Also, assuming the TP flight departs at 540pm rather than 540am.

Oops yes 5:40 pm. We will probably go for the Polaris lounge. There's a lot of back-and-forth with leaving airside once we land in EWR in Terminal C (at 9:30 am) then going through security again in Terminal B once the TAP check-in desk is open (2 pm? 3.5 hours before our flight?) then taking the airtrain back to C to the Polaris Lounge, then taking the airside United shuttle back to B to our TAP gate.

Since the OP is on separate tickets, lounge access could be dependent on having a boarding pass on your departing TP flight. Also if the OP has checked luggage, you will need to claim your luggage in a somewhat timely manner. If they go off the airport property, is there a left luggage facility service at EWR?

TAP's website suggests EWR check-in starts 3:30 hours before departure.

I looked into left luggage options around EWR and didn't find anything that seemed convenient. We are not checking bags anyway so we will have our carryon and personal items with us.
Yes - see above. I don't think we'll get lounge access until after the check-in desk opens. Since we are not checking bags, our only option is to keep them with us wherever we go. EWR and the immediate surrounding area didn't seem to have good/convenient options for left luggage.

Interesting... Have a UAX operated by Republic flight out EWR today that is showing a gate in the A terminal.
Terminal A has mostly been exclusive domain of GoJet lately. Surprised Republic is using it.
Newark ops has been a mess this week, so maybe that is the reason...

Is United now using bus gates at Terminal C?
I went to get the bus shuttle over to terminal A, and they are now making everyone for the bus queue at the upper level gate area. When I was there, they line was way into the terminal area, almost to the top of the ramp / security area.
And new signage that shows gates 71T thru 71Z now here as well. Only thing I can think of is bussing to planes with this setup...
Another crappy development at EWR. Guess a karmic trade off for having a nice United Club.

it could be tangentially related if they are short of gates and decided to use bus gates as a stop gap solution.
if so, I haven’t seen any news about it.
just the degradation of the bus transfer service is bad enough.

I didn't notice any flights using the C71 "gates". Not sure where they would have room for 6 planes worth of passengers in this area, plus the transfer bus.
But Newark has never really been concerned with passengers comfort anyway.

So, was back again today for try number two at getting home.
They didn't have everyone queue upstairs this time, but had us wait in the downstairs holding pen...which was a sauna (90 degree day here).
Oh, and they have instituted dragon checks for boarding passes before letting anyone thru....in a very rude (Newark) manner.
No idea what they would do if you wanted to travel for other reasons. And didn't go A->C to know if they are checking that way as well.

It seems they have started using some of these C71 letter gates (bus gates?) at least for some CR5 flights. Based on flight status for today (5/26):
e.g. 4466 AVP-EWR arrived C71T today and that same aircraft 4473 EWR-IND out of C71T
4559 AVP-EWR arrived C71V and that aircraft then went out as 4582 EWR-RIC out of C71V
I haven't researched further to see how much these gates are being used, or if it goes beyond CR5 flights.
All of the DCA departures used A gates as usual.
