OK, thanks for all replies. It is clear that no auto registration at Nexus any more. At Nexus lane, you shall have a letter of authorization from your mom or pop that you are driving the car with their permission and thats that. This impression is enhanced by another posters posting stating that he signed some declaration while being interviewed for NEXUS that he/she will make sure that the auto license plate is clearly visible and not obscured "irrespective" whose car he/she was driving. Nexus is only concerend about the visibility of tag and not the ownership or are they?

1. how long to get an application approved (electronic vs. paper)?

2. how long to get an appointment at YEG?

3. if I get approved now and my B-day is in April do I get a validity of April 2010 plus 5 yrs or is it 5 yrs from approval?

1. Took me about 2 weeks (during holiday season last year) from electronic application to initial approval. I would expect paper to take a bit longer... but I don't know.

2. Don't know.

3. Looks like upcoming birthday + 5 years. I got a total validity of about 5 years, 3 months.

I am the OP. I was registered at Pearson on Monday. I asked quite a few questions about driving loaner cars across the Nexus lane. I was told by CBSA that they do not care a bit if the car belongs to my father in law or a friend, the only concern thye have is that all occupants shall be card holders. Thats it.

The Pearson office is very nice setup. I also went to Fort Erie office as my 1.5 yr old son was scheduled there. That office is worst I came accross so far. I would not ask any one to go to Fort Erie office. What a cra!!y office that is. I should have taken him to Pearson with me. Any ways, as he grows old and when I apply for my wife once she completes 3 years in states, I will get hisb iris scan too. Could some body tell me how they treat people at Niagra Fall, NY office to people?

The enrollment office was not upto date on GOES website
 

I was at enrollment office few days ago and they kept telling me that I can "DROP" in my new passport, if it is changed in future, for the update in database.

WHEREAS, the goes membership manage page states that I can update documents and mail-in address on line. Who is correct? The enrollment office or the GOES website?

I think the website takes preference over the office, as they may not have read the letter about the update. any commnets? In this case, I do not have to visit the enrollment center for almost six years, as my birth day is in July 2015.

Hmmm, I never noticed that before on the Web site, but just saw it. Weird. Any document update needs to be presented at an enrollment center as they need to make a copy of it for their files. That can't happen through GOES. Further proof is here, on the FAQ page

Perhaps you can update the actual document numbers on GOES. But the office does need a copy. I suspect that if you update the number online, and travel with Nexus before updating at the enrollment center, you will be the recipient of a visit to secondary.

A while back I got caught importing adult video DVDs through mail into Canada, and it got seized by Canadian Customs. The item was properly declared in the paperwork.

Will this prevent me from getting a Nexus card in the future?

When I enrolled at the office, they did not make a copy of any of the documents I presented to them, viz my passport and DL.

There is actually a "button" on the goes membership page where it states "update documents" and "change mail-in address". I did ask the enrollment center officer if I can update my address online and he stated "certainly you can try". No copy of documents needed, if you enrolled through GOES. the officer did ask me if I enrolled online or sent the paper apps. I said online, and she did not bother making copies.

"Approved Trusted Traveler Program members can now also update their passport or Lawful Permanent Resident card information on GOES."

The faq page is old and this news is from DEC 3, 2009.

Nexus card supposedly is good for air transportation in lieu of passport
 

CBP states that NEXUS card is WHTI compliant and can be used in lieu of passport for Air. Than, why the agents are looking for NEXUS card. Why is it mandatory to carry Passport besides NEXUS. Does not make sense. Why to issue a card. why not just issue a sticker which is RFID and can be used at both air and land. quicker, simpler.


Second Question. the enrollment office states that when traveliing to and from USA, I need to fill out the Customs declaration form in pen and than transfer that information to machine. What a crap that is? why to do the same exercise twice. What is the kiosk receipt is for? Wht to fill out TDC when machine spits out the same info?

BTW, passport and current Nexus card were requested at the time of update. Less than 10 minutes to process. :)

You have to declare any customs violation on the application in the past eiter 5 or 10 years, I can't recall which. They will find it in your background check, anyhow. Will likely prevent you from being approved for at least that long, possibly longer.

Look back for the many posts on "why do I have to carry a passport" question. From my understanding, the gist is the cards are only compliant at the automated kiosk's for air and Nexus lane's at the land border. What if the kiosk's are down? (and this has happened). What if you get sent to secondary inspection? I would think that it is better to pick your battles than not carry a passport, and try to fight an immigration agent at secondary who can deny you entry.

As for the declarations form, this is required by law to be filled out when travelling by air (both by US and Canada when going to their respective countries). The kiosk's ask a summary, as they don't ask specific questions and the form does. They need to know who to send you to talk to if you tick a yes to one of those forms. I suspect they can/do keep the forms for a set period of time in their records, and would think if they suspect you of any customs/immigration violations when travelling, they have the right to and will want to pull those up.

Nexus is not a way to get around the entry laws of Canada/US, it is about a way to let those who they consider low-risk travellers get into the country more quickly, so they can focus more on higher risk travellers. I'll take my Nexus the way it is - if you don't like the rules, you should feel free to cancel your membership and go back to the lines with everyone else who doesn't have it.

No. Update was done at Nexus office in 2008.
