Soon I will be taking an inter-BC Jazz flight into YVR, connecting to a US-bound AC flight at YVR.

It's been awhile, but I remember this long corridor exiting an inter-BC Jazz flight for US connections with one single US CBP booth for such flights (unless I wanted to depart the domestic concourse and walk to the Int'l concourse).

Does anyone know if there's a NEXUS machine at that place where to connect, or is access to a NEXUS machine only at the usual place?

Which one would be faster in terms of walking....taking that corridor, or just going to the main terminal, as if I'm checking in?

Maybe. I just did my first land crossing since August 2001, with me, my non-Nexus wife, and our dog. It was at Eastgate, ID, which does not have any Nexus lanes, and I presented only my Nexus card and my wife's passport.

Questions asked were: where are we going, for how long, alcohol, tobacco, who owns the car. They were asked and answered quickly, as if going through the motions. We seemed to go through a lot faster than some of the other Canadian cars in front of us. I was surprised that the agent didn't ask about the dog's vaccination records.

Other than requiring WHTI documents, it was pretty much the same way it was 8 years ago... hard to say if Nexus made a difference.

Similarly on return to Canada -- quick questions, basically the minimum.

If you cross often enough, you do tend to notice it makes a difference. I haven't been sent to secondary once since I got NEXUS. I've got an earlier post detailing my thoughts about this.

If you're not using the NEXUS lane, stay the hell away from the Peace Arch crossing in the southbound direction. There's one officer there who's not so nice and sent me to secondary every single time before I got my NEXUS.

Oh and one more very important thing. If you have a NEXUS card and no passport and go across to the USA, make sure you have your birth certificate with you and be prepared to show it. You can technically be turned away from coming back to Canada if you only have a NEXUS card and could be forced into using another crossing or even worse, waiting until the NEXUS lane opens. This is very unlikely to happen, but can still technically occur.

Where are the NEXUS machines at the new US departure hall in YUL?

Doing and update on my nexus card. I did the interview last Wed at YVR. I got home today and the card was already here. Not sure if it came today or last week while I was gone, but was pretty fast!

Is Nexus no longer issuing the TDCs? A friend just recently received a Nexus card and after the interview no TDCs were provided or even mentioned.. Just curious if they somehow missed it or if they've phased them out. Anyone know?

They have been out of TDC perodically at YUL. They also may not have offered one to them if they mentioned that they would not travel by car.

TDC are still requried to re-enter Canada by car having purchased any goods at all - even within your allowance. Which, I personally think is a complete waste of time to have to document unless you are over.

Iris scanner reliability question

I arrived at T1 international at YYZ and went to the NEXUS scanners. Two machines kept me doing the back forward right dance and said they couldn't read the iris. The third read it and said I'm not in the database. Which is untrue. I gave up and got in the regular line. It seems like the iris scanners are not working right or the database is bad. I wish I could just use the card.

They're usually quite reliable. I'd suggest you drop into the Nexus/Canpass office when you have a moment. They should be able to check into it for you and, if necessary, do another iris scan.

You could also use the crew line if the machines are down.

Nexus perhaps not worth it when you have an I-20

I'm a Canadian citizen at an American university. Every year i'm at school I get issued a new I-20. Wish I'd gotten Nexus before I became a U.S. non-resident alien, because I guess then my Nexus would have just been good for 5 years. But instead now I have to go back to the Nexus office each year to give them my latest I-20 (no appointment needed at least). BUT, for the third year in a row, after submitting my new I-20 the Nexus kiosk promptly sent me to secondary inspection as I was trying to catch my U.S. bound flight!

I really can't emphasize how terrible it is being at secondary inspection at an airport, with a flight taking off in 20mins. You have no idea how long you'll be there. Thank god I haven't missed a flight yet, but 2x were close and by the time I got to the gate everyone had boarded.

I've never had a bad experience with U.S. CBP agents, they've all been extremely friendly and helpful with me. And as others have remarked here, the line up at YOW customs is usually nothing (for my YOW-DCA flights), and when I connect YOW-YYZ-DCA, I usually have baggage, and the "picking up checked baggage" line is actually removed from the line for ppl starting their flight at YYZ to U.S., so you don't have to get close to the great mass of unwashed Torontonians.

All this to say that I think the Nexus is ALMOST not worth it for me, other than I get to feel like Jason Bourne for a few brief seconds (which are great). :D

I hope you aren't getting to the airport with 20 mins to flight time. I still allow ample time, even with nexus. Its not worth missing a flight. I'd rather sit by the gates and enjoy some overpriced pastry products and some coffee than worry about getting sent to secondary and delayed.

Just to update, I did my interview on Wed Aug 26th, and flew home Mon Aug 31st. The card beat me home. They are doing them pretty quick. I did my interview at YVR. The guy wants me to bring in my birth cert. SO take that with you.

I got picked for a secondary inspection in Toronto on August 22nd. Scary stuff! Took 45 minutes before everything was said and done.

Me and my Partner filled out one declation card since we're married. He did not get picked for secondary but I did. Well, when I got to secondary I got chewed out for filling out one form. I was informed when doing NEXUS to fill out a form each incase one gets called and the other doesn't. This is exactly opposite as to what was told to me when I got NEXUS.

It could be the whole same sex couple thing again, who knows....

Let's hope I don't have to do that anytime in the near future. I'm starting to wonder how benefical this whole NEXUS thing is to me. After arriving back in Canada I did NEXUS and cleared customs right away, only to wait for 60 minutes for my suitcases to come out. So what did it save me exactly? nothing.

You could do it either way. If you're both Nexus, I would say it would make more sense to fill out one card each, but there is nothing wrong with filling out one with both your names. Then again, if the Nexus terminal randomly selected you for further examination, presumably your partner would choose to follow you in rather than sit around outside waiting for you, not knowing what's going on. I don't see a problem with either method. Don't sweat it if the guy was having an off day.

I'm sure that had nothing to do with it. Same sex couples are a dime a dozen and the officers don't generally think anything of it. I understand the rules in the US may be different with regard to the definition of "family" on their declaration forms.

The machines were operating - just not for me. Would that count?
