Yes you can bring a rental car through the Nexus lane,
but remember all passengers in the car must have their own Nexus card, if not you must use the regular lanes. I rent cars and use the Nexus lane regularly, I was asked only once by the officer at the Nexus lane if the car I was driving was a rental, I said yes, named the rental agency and he said thank you and that was it.

According to the people I've talked to in the Nexus office (and several times), the above statement is incorrect. In fact, i have been trying to get them to change my primary passport (I'm dual) since my residency changed about a year after I got my Nexus membership - and it still hasn't been done, at least according to GOES. I was told that I need to be carrying one of my passports, but as long as both were listed as part of the membership, it doesn't matter which one. And in fact, I have been randomly selected for secondary a couple of times, and another time had to declare an item, and all 3 times, when they asked for a passport, I gave them the one that is technically my "non-primary", and they didn't care or bring anything up.

OK, that is good to know. I will have to ask them again. But they were pretty clear before that the passport you travelled with had to be the one whose number was on the old NEXUS card. Perhaps now that the new NEXUS card doesn't have a passport number on it just citizenship, this has changed.

What this does show is that their defined policies are either not very clear, or not very well known by the agents (or both!)

And/or keeps on changing.

Been going across quite a bit lately. I've been bringing my passport but I have not been asked for it.

I've been asked for my NEXUS card, once only asked for Passport once (that was once when a CBP guy asked for either/or).

They likely figure that since most airline check-in folks won't take NEXUS (even though they can), that the Passport request isn't necessary. Besides, they probably think they can get the "gotcha" better via the NEXUS card.

Speaking of NEXUS card, no more signs or any requests for the card at YYZ T1 (as of Wednesday).

melissayyz Jul 24, 2009 12:09 pm

The last couple times I've gone through YYZ T1 (last time was Friday) I've been asked for the card. On Friday they examined it for awhile... maybe they were bored? I have yet to be asked for my passport, though.

Has anyone used the NEXUS Whirlpool bridge recently?

Is it significantly faster than the Peace/Rainbow/Queenston-Lewiston going from Toronto to Buffalo airport?

I get to test it out this Friday :o

lcohen999 Jul 30, 2009 12:20 pm

I avoid Queenston-Lewiston like the plague. Bottlenecks in too many places, just ignore your GPS.

As for Rainbow vs Whirlpool, if the bridge itself isn't busy, it is a (slightly) longer drive to the Whirlpool (5 mins before, 5 mins after). In the end, two fifths or one half dozen of the other.

Although when Rainbow is backed up...

Just remember from the American side to Canada, if you use Whirlpool you need to put money on your Nexus card from the unmanned booth, Rainbow has a toll booth.

As I was flying home YUL-ORD last Friday, standing in line to get my bags tagged, I realized I forgot my passports at the office. It was too late to head back and get them, or even have them sent out in a cab. So, I went to the self-checkin kiosk, scanned my boarding card and printed out my two bag tags. I applied them (I thought) correctly and went through to Nexus. I was not asked for anything by the immigration officer, and made it to the lounge, where I called my assistant and had her fedex my US passport to me at home. At the gate, Air Canada wanted to see passports, but the Nexus card was ok.

When I deplaned I asked the agent if I would be ok to return to Canada with just the Nexus card. He said it was fine, that the Nexus replaces a passport (it certainly doesn't) and if the agent gave me a hard time at checkin, I should ask for a lead agent who would know the rules. My passport arrived today so I don't have to test it out.

Oh, and both bags stayed in Montreal for an extra day; when they arrived at midnight Saturday, one of the tags I had applied had clearly come off, and had been stapled back together. I looked, and had not peeled & stuck the right part. Lesson learned...

Question for you Nexus experts, i know i can't use the Nexus lane if i've got a non-nexus person in the car with me, but dose showing my nexus card at a regular lane reduce the number of questions i get asked.

Only if you're the only person in the car. I ran into this coming through Peace Arch; I just missed the closing of the nexus lane by a few minutes and picked one of the regular lanes. The CBSA officer treated me like they used to, before the current era of inane paranoia.

I'd say you're pretty lucky. Had you gotten a random secondary, and been asked for your passport and weren't able to produce it, you probably would have been SOL. Your Nexus would have been revoked, and you may have been denied entry to the US until you could produce one. Also, probably a headache for crossing the border in the future.

Just curious, how did you get the machine to bypass the passport scan when travelling to the US? IME, my Nexus card has never been able to be read by a check in kiosk. Also, coming in from the states, I've found the US airlines won't accept Nexus, and that AC even in the past year or so has been more strict, and will only accept a passport. Definitely a good idea to have the passport fedexed to you.

I think that technically I was ok, the only people who insist on seeing a passport are the airline staff. For border officials, the Nexus card appears sufficient. I will ask the question specifically next week when I go to YYZ. From my reading of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, I was ok.

I had already printed my boarding card at the office, so I scanned that.

I have been told several times in the Nexus office to make sure I have a passport. With the ambiguity on a Nexus card being acceptable on its own outside of the machine (discussed in this thread several times) and the possibility of a random secondary and being asked to produce a passport (I have been random-ed about 3 or 4 times, and only once not been asked for my passport at the time), it is an extremely bad idea to go through without one. Using a generic "for border officials" that a Nexus card is sufficient is probably not a smart assumption.

Nexus usage

Heres a question I can yet to get a solid answer on. Next week I will be coming back to the US from Poland with my flight landing in YYZ first then to DTW. Can I use my Nexus membership to enter canada and then use it to Re-enter the US. I am also a global entry member if that matters.
