You can try the nexus machine; if it does not work, you can go to the head of the queue for immigration, as you have your card. The machine should work right away, it did for me but that was in Canpass days, many years ago.

Great, thanks! Assuming I have the pass, what time should I be back at the airport for an 8:40pm flight to Europe on a weekday?

For MIA-YYZ, where does customs/immigration happen? In MIA or YYZ? If YYZ, how long does it take to get through there on a weekday ~4pm?

Is it still possible to walk-in to the enrollment center at YYZ to get retina scans done or do I need an appointment? I already have a NEXUS card.

Thanks!

You would clear customs in YYZ. However, if you have a Nexus card, but your iris isn't scanned, you won't be able to use Nexus for air travel AFAIK. You'll have to go to the Nexus office to get the scan done first - you shouldn't need an appointment. Don't believe you're supposed to be able to use the air mode at all - through a machine or the crew line, until you've had your iris scan completed.

Nexus is no help to you if you're flying to Europe.

Doh, you're right. Do I just simply show up and fly (like I do in the US) or do I have to "exit" the country and such?

Canada does not have exit controls. You just need to give yourself enough time for security, there are a lot of European bound flights that leave near the same time. Also, you don't really have a lot of time to do anything; there is no convenient public transit into Toronto, and a cab during rush hour can eat up the better part of an hour to get downtown. I would recommend you enjoy the amenities at YYZ and enjoy the soup and free liquor at the Maple Leaf Lounge (if you're flying on *A, your 1P status gets you access to Air Canada's lounges).

A long shot,

but has anyone done NEXUS travelling on a bus?

Is there a seperate area/kiosk, or must one still talk to the immigration goons?

I took MegaBus to BUF once with Nexus card in hand.

No seperate line, no special treatment at US CBP.

If anything, it slowed me down since the officer told me "bus people" don't usually have Nexus and she proceeded to quiz me on what seemed like 10 years of US entries.

CBSA/CBP says to wait 24 hours, but I'm a bit unsure. After I got my iris scan the CBSA agent told me to try the trainer machine they had in the office, which I assume is pretty much the same as the live ones (it takes your irises). Not sure why anyone would get their iris scan the same day of travel though.

I was quizzed on 10 years of entries at the Windsor/Detroit border. Didn't have my NEXUS card in hand at the time. :(

Non-resident Q

Searched the thread but did not find any tangible results. Here is my situation:

Canadian, living in Germany, non-resident status with CRA, but have an address in TO in my ONT driving license (lived there last time in 04). No assets, bank accounts or utility bills. Did anyone attempt to obtain Nexus card being in similar predicament? Thanks for sharing...

I find CPB is always more strict with "bus people". Seems like they consider everyone on a bus to be an illegal migrant by default - you get what you pay for I guess.

I'm surprised she even knew what NEXUS. As a "bus person" (synonym for "ghetto" really) I had to explain what NEXUS was and the whole iris scanning thing. Response: "we do that?" Yes, you do! I also left an article on Mile Running so they could educate themselves on why someone would be travelling to Australia with only a back pack for less than 4 days.

You must be a resident of NA for 3 continuous years as part of the requirements to apply. You must supply a list of employers and residences for at least 5 years. Your TO address would not match your work experience. Not worth the risk of lying as they might flag your file for the future.
