I was never told that at YOW entering the country with something. In my case I answered yes at the kiosk, and brought everything to the agent. He saw from the NEXUS slip I believe that I had said yes to something, scanned my form to see what it was, then told me the place to go for my agricultural item.

Was told by agent that I am breaking the law, that you are not allowed to answer yes and then use Nexus. I have done so at least 15 times since Canpass days. He let me through "this time" and I went to the Nexus office to confirm. Two agents concurred that I was not allowed to answer yes on section a and use Nexus. One agent added that I didn't need to declare coffee. I was surprised, as it is a fruit. Or a vegetable. Or something.

And I'm still actively posting here....

Doesn't make any sense. Why would they ask if you answered yes to anything, if you simply can't use it if you say yes.

I've said yes to a question on the form several times, mostly into the US but on occasion, back to Canada, as well, mostly through YYZ. Never had a problem. In each of these cases, at least for me, they send you to secondary, ask you why you answered yes, on occasion, look through bags, and then send me on my merry way.

You can not use Nexus if you are bringing in business goods, that is the one place that you can't answer yes to and still use Nexus. And that is clearly laid out in the Nexus guide.

And coming into Canada, the officer was correct that you don't need to declare coffee. Going into the US, yes, you do need to declare it.

Quite. I mentioned this and the officer got a bit short with me, asking if I wanted him to enforce the law and retain my nexus card. I explained, calmly and politely, that I was not questioning his authority or knowledge of the regulations, but rather wanted to understand what exactly I was doing wrong.

You cannot bring commercial goods or currency instruments > $10k through Nexus. I have done the latter on several occasions (and been thanked by the officer for having already filled in the form). In the Nexus office, they explained that you can answer yes to part B, but not to part A.

I asked your very questions above, and was told it is just to confirm that you have answered "no". I pointed out that you probably have to sign the form too, but the kiosk doesn't ask if you have done so. Logically (and we're talking government rules here, so logic is not really our best friend) this would mean that Nexus is doing what we would expect, allowing you to declare and go to secondary. I was trying to avoid the line from a just-arrived Air India flight, or I would have gone to an immigration officer in the first place.

Lesson here is this does not need to make sense to us, just to them.

I've had a similar attitude at the Nexus office in YYZ, why do some CBP perceive asking for clarification as a threat to their authority?

Because the types of personalities that tend to positions of authority and law enforcement are often closet fascists where authority is only to be obeyed not questioned.

I've answered "Yes" numerous times in YYC, YVR and YYZ and never had an issue.

Specifically, I regularly travel with my dog in the cabin and tick "yes" to "Animal or Animal Products". It's an automatic secondary every time, in either direction. I walk into secondary, they always ask why I'm there and then I point at the dog. Quick check of the papers (if even that) and I go on my way. Never been told I wasn't allowed to, and I don't see anything on their websites, or in the applicable legislation that would suggest I couldn't.

What's the process and cost of applying to NEXUS if I already have Global Entry?

emcampbe Aug 19, 2011 6:13 pm

Chcek the GE site, but I think you can now get some sort of GE card, which allows you to use the Nexus lanes going into the US by car, I believe. Don't think you can come into Canada, but I would check with a GE office, first. GE kiosk's are also being deployed at US pre-clearance locations at Canadian airports. YVR, and I think YOW, already have them available for use (Nexus members can choose either one, I believe), and they are coming to other Canadian airports soon. That will take care of entering the US from Canada.

While its easy for Nexus members to be given GE since the US has already cleared you, I'm guessing the entering Canada issue is that Canada has not cleared most GE members. In addition, Nexus use at an airport requires an iris scan, which GE members don't get. So if you want full access, you may have to just apply for Nexus seperately. Wondering if your accounts might get combined upon Nexus approval/activation.

I suspect so. If you have NEXUS and your fingerprints are on file, you have GE, so there is no need to have both separately. Get NEXUS and you're done. Cheaper, too. The only downside is that it requires an interview by both Canada and the US, and thus has to be done at an interview centre in Canada or near the US/Canadian border, which isn't convenient for all Americans.

I know that driving into the US I can use the NEXUS lines. The issue is mainly for driving across the border by Niagara Falls and flying into YYZ. I would need an interview by Canada, but how would I apply in order to bypass the USA part of the interview, and save money on the cost, as I already applied and paid $100.

subject Trusted Traveler Program News

We are pleased to announce that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is partnering with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on a new Department of Homeland Security initiative announced July 14, 2011, that qualifies some passengers for expedited screening through U.S. airport security checkpoints.

This pilot program will be available to U.S. citizens who are members of CBP’s Global Entry, NEXUS, and SENTRI Trusted Traveler programs. The pilot program will provide expedited screening through TSA checkpoints via dedicated screening lanes.

Additional information will be sent out prior to the pilot’s implementation, explaining more about the program and the necessary steps you will need to take in order to participate.

For more information and the latest updates, please visit www.tsa.gov or contact TSA at (866)289-9673.

Additionally, CBP would like to announce the availability of Global Entry kiosks at select Canadian preclearance locations. Global Entry kiosks are now available at CBP preclearance at the Vancouver International Airport and at Ottawa’s MacDonald-Cartier Airport. Global Entry kiosks will be placed at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport and at Toronto’s Lester B. Pearson International Airport by September 2011. The placement of Global Entry kiosks at Canadian preclearance locations is the next step in the integration of the Global Entry and NEXUS Trusted Traveler programs.

The integration of the Global Entry and NEXUS programs began in December 2010, when CBP published a Federal Register Notice announcing that NEXUS members could participate in Global Entry. With the deployment of Global Entry kiosks to Canadian preclearance, Global Entry members will be able to take advantage of the program when returning home from Canada. NEXUS members will have the option of using either the Global Entry or NEXUS kiosks in preclearance. Further announcements will be made as necessary.

This is an automated email. Please do not reply.

Was in the news 2 weeks ago. They will allow Trusted Traveler as well as certain elites at certain airports (AA elites at DFW, DL elites at ATL...) Wish it was available at EWR

With GE kiosks at pre clearance we wo t have to fill out those blue cards any longer and th food question appears differently on the kiosk Q than on the blue card Qs.

nexus interview

I was approved for Nexus, but need to pass Canadian interview (already have GE). I am in Toronto now, but the first available interview is in October.
Has anyone just showed up at YYZ for interview?
