They were nearly a day faster over the whole route with its many stops, where prop aircraft had become uncompetitive.

Right, so by 1962 those two had gone back to the USA. Any other 880 users around Europe ?

Well, I am tempted to say KLM Royal Dutch....however, I believe the aircraft was actually operated by VIASA and had KLM titles on one side and VIASA titles on the other. Plus, I do not think this CV-880 saw service in Europe.

So let's go with Air Viking which also operated former United B720 aircraft and may have operated a former Air Canada Vanguard as well.

Well, we know the stop in question was not Fort de France or on any French controlled island in the Caribbean. Nor was the stop made at Puerto Plata in the D.R. on Hispaniola or at Gander on the island of Newfoundland or at Bermuda.

But what about the flag that formerly flew over this island where the stop was made? Ah, it was the Union Jack.

Yep, it was Nassau. This quiz item was taken from a 1999 North American OAG so I do not have the complete TATL scheds. Here are the AOM scheds between HAV and NAS....

IW 623: Nassau 4:00p - 5:15p Havana
Op: Fridays only
Equip: DC-10

IW 629: Havana 4:30p - 5:40p Nassau
Op: Mondays only
Equip: DC-10

Yes, the Cv880 with KLM livery had it on one side only, it was Viasa on the other. It operated a joint run from Caracas, through Curacao (then still regarded as Netherlands) and on to either JFK or through Kingston to Miami, depending on the day. It was owned, registered and crewed by Viasa. I don't believe it ever came to Europe.

KLM had a "thing" about half-and-half painted aircraft with their partners, they did various ones over time, DC8s and DC10s as well. I think the most recent one was a DC10 jointly with Northwest. The prime owner of the aircraft was generally on the left, facing the passengers as they boarded, with the secondary livery on the right.

http://www.airteamimages.com/convair...es_186992.html

Air Viking was an Icelandic charter operator, they had an ex-Japan Air Lines Cv880 for just a few months in 1973, it ran holiday flights from Reykjavik into Palma and Malaga. These flights are a real nuisance to air traffic controllers, as they run north-south right across all the east-west North Atlantic tracks. The aircraft also seems to have shown up at Zurich a couple of times, my guess is that it did heavy maintenance with Swissair, who did the Cv990 for just about every European operator, and thus had the skills. It never flew for anyone else afterwards, and after years subsequently stored at Mojave was scrapped there.

http://www.oldjets.net/air-viking.html

We're doing pretty well. I think there at least two other Cv880 operators who showed up in Europe at some time.

I regret to report that the national flag of the UK is known as the Union FLAG, and that the label Union Jack is only applied to it being flown from the Jackstaff at the front of a Royal Navy ship. It's a longstanding campaign to prevent the latter expression gaining ground, you will find led in the UK by the Daily Telegraph newspaper, along with detecting those who fly them upside-down (a subtle distinction, but on the odd occasion where that happens at a significant occasion it generally ends up in the press as well. It is NOT symmetrical).

Let's ask the people who make them.

Per jlemon: I think this may have been Carnival Air Lines (KW) operating B727-200 flights from Ponce to both Newark (EWR) and New York (JFK) with some specific flights perhaps serving both airports (such as a routing of PSE-JFK-EWR or PSE-EWR-JFK).

You've correctly identified Carnival Air Lines as the carrier of record. Additionally, KW did indeed operate a 727-200 on a Sunday only schedule between Ponce and New York JFK.

We are still looking for one additional airport served by KW from Ponce. As well, a different aircraft type was utilized on this route.

Per jrl767: Carnival Airlines, obviously closely affiliated with the eponymous cruise line, had a fair amount of service at the port of Fort Lauderdale (FLL) ... I seem to recall that KW operated the 737-400 as well as the 72S

Alas, the other airport was not Ft. Lauderdale. Additionally, we are still looking for the specific aircraft type KW used to serve this route.

12. Due to flooding, the eastbound Empire Builder is unable to continue beyond Minot. You need to be in Minneapolis by tomorrow morning. No problem – you’ll just call Northwest Airlines and book a flight. Whaaat? Northwest doesn’t fly between Minot and Minneapolis - at least not for another few years. Thankfully, there is an airline that does offer through plane service between Minot and Minneapolis via a single, daily four stop direct flight. Identify the airline, the routing and the aircraft you’ll be flying upon.

THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ARE BASED UPON SCHEDULES IN A 1965 OAG

21. Following a wonderful weekend of food and grog in New Orleans, you’re relocating to Merida, Mexico to visit archeologist friends who have unearthed some important new artifacts. You were expecting to have to make a connection in Mexico City or Miami but to your surprise there’s a nonstop flight to Merida that operates four days per week. Identify the airline and equipment you’ll be flying upon.
A N S W E R E D

22. You’re ready to return to the states but a tropical storm has damaged Merida’s airport, forcing you to make alternative arrangements. Identify the closest airport to Merida with jet service.

23. You need to relocate from Mexico City to north of the border. No, not that border! The other border – to Montreal, Canada. You’ve flown between these two cities many times and have generally been quite pleased with the service you’ve received aboard Canadian Pacific. Still, variety is the spice of life and so you decide to try another airline that offers a two-stop direct flight between Mexico City and Montreal. Identify that airline, the two enroute stops and the aircraft utilized.
A N S W E R E D

24. While in Montreal, you’ve got time for a bit of plane spotting. Air Canada and Canadian Pacific DC-8s proliferate. Enough of the DC-8s already! Identify each of the five foreign airlines that operate Boeing 707s into Montreal.
A N S W E R E D

25. You’re in Boston and you need to fly to the U.K. Oh No! All of the nonstop flights to London are sold out! But wait! From Boston there’s another city in the U.K. that benefits from nonstop flights. Identify that city as well as the airline and aircraft that operate the flight.

26. Two airlines offer nonstop flights between London and Gibraltar. One of them offers the occasional First Class equipped flight while the other offers only a single once weekly flight all-economy class configured flight. At 1965 prices, we can’t afford First Class anyway, so we book a seat on the all-economy class flight. Identify the airline and aircraft operating this once weekly flight.
A N S W E R E D

27. Aside from nonstop flights to the U.S. and Canada, Madrid, Spain also has nonstop trans-Atlantic flights to five different destinations that are at least 2000 miles away. Identify these five long distance routes flown from Madrid, as well as the airlines and aircraft that fly them. Three of the routes are served by two carriers (Gee, Chumley, I wonder which one one of those airlines is?) while the other two are served by only a single airline.

28. Only one airline offers nonstop jet service into St. Croix from five different regional airports. Identify that airline.

29. If you wanted to fly direct from Miami to Antofagasta, Chile aboard a jet, which airline would you call? What kind of jet would you be flying upon?

30. Identify the four airlines and the respective jet equipment each operated into Asuncion, Paraguay. It’s not important to identify where the flights originated from. Just identify the airlines and airplanes.
-
31. The Buenos Aires to Santiago route is served nonstop by eleven airlines, each operating jet equipment. The jets were built by five different manufacturers. Each airline operates only a single jet type on this route. Identify each of the five jets and match it with the airline(s) that operates it.
HINT: One aircraft type is operated by 5 airlines, two aircraft types are operated by two airlines each and the last two types are unique to just one airline each.

32. Identify the three South American gateway cities from which you could fly nonstop to Dakar, Senegal. Further, identify the airlines that fly from each of the three cities and the aircraft each operates.

33 What was the hometown airline of Dakar, Senegal?

34. If in 1965 you wanted to fly aboard a Boeing 720B between London and Beirut – regardless of enroute stops – which airline would you call?

35. If you wanted to fly out of Bangkok aboard a Comet, which airline would you call?

36. Following a failed venture to introduce the world’s first Der Weinerschnitzel franchise to Iran, it’s time to move on to the Philippines. Who’d have ever guessed that there’d be a single once weekly flight between Abadan, Iran and Manila? Stops are made but let’s not get distracted worrying about those. Just identify the airline and the equipment.

37. Boeing 720s were pretty rare sights around southeast Asia in 1966. Identify the only airline operating a 720 into Bangkok.

Bonus Question: On its way in from Frankfurt, this flight made a refueling stop in a little used airport?

38. Hong Kong is a popular spot amongst airlines that operate Convair jetliners. A check of the schedules reveals five airlines that operate either the 880 or 990 into HKG. Can you identify each of the five airlines?
All but one identified. So far, CX, JL, SR & CAT...

39. You’ve just finished negotiating an arms deal in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and now must relocate to Manila, Philippines. To your surprise, one airline offers a direct 2 stop, once weekly flight. Identify that airline and the aircraft you’ll be flying upon.

another city that saw more-than-occasional Carnival traffic was West Palm Beach (PBI) ... as far as aircraft, KW had a handful of A300s, but I don't think they were operating any wide-body jets in 1991; let's see if we're looking for a 737-200

and speaking of 737s: I know I'm nowhere close to Seat 2A's totals, but last night's SEA-LAX trip was my 500th flight on Boeing's best-seller (just short of 20% of all my flight history, currently at 2509)
