What I don't understand is why Apple produced such a load of rubbish with its maps app when its partner TomTom makes an excellent satnav app (better than the factory fitted options in my cars).

You must not customize your phone much. 1 minute! For some people it's a half hour. And that's if you remember all your email passwords and settings.

I don't doubt that worked for you, but that's like saying "I only need 4 hours of sleep per night". Understand that what works for you doesn't necessarily work for everyone. iPhones are highly customizeable.

Apple may not want to pay what TomTom would require in order to risk its (i.e. TomTom) being pigeon-holed even more by Apple and surrendering yet more customers to phone/phone service providers.

TomTom has been in mapping and navigation since the mid 90's. How long has Apple been doing it? From what I understand, TomTom only supplied the maps, not the routing engine.
You're right ScottC, but Apple could buy TomTom outright without noticing. I really don't understand why they have produced a product that is significantly inferior to both Google Maps (as a pure mapping app) and TomTom (as a sat nav app).

I have the iPhone 5 and 4S in hand and after using both over the course of this weekend, I am fine with keeping the 4S. Whatever IOS6 has done for the 5 but not of the 4S has not motivated me to keep the iPhone 5 for myself.

Apparently Apple has acknowledged a nasty bug with the iOS 6 related to a feature that was in the beta then pulled. Apple built a feature to switch to the cellular data link when WiFi wasn't working well, but then they dropped the feature for the final release. However it still seems to have been enabled for Verizon customers.

And Verizon isn't going to charge.

That is what Verizon has said, but it is to be seen to what extent that takes place. It's to be seen if the remedy will be automated or if it may require contact by some customers; it's also to be seen if the remedy (no-charge/charge-removal) only applies to those who acquired the iPhone 5 from Verizon or if it also applies to no-contract iPhone 5s too.
