I'd hoped to hear a pin drop was still available from the forum...
I'll use it to send myself the location of places I've been. And similarly I'll prepare a list of map URLs of destinations/attractions when I'm travelling. I really like map locations as URLs clickable on any platform.

Holding an iPhone with iOS 6 installed is the only way I'm aware of that you could try the new maps app before you "buy." I offered you a suggestion on how to perhaps accomplish that.
Someone else would have to address the pin drop question; I haven't installed iOS 6 and have no immediate plans to do so.

I finally got around to downgrading to iOS 5.1.1
All went well initially but when I tired to do a restore - from both iTunes and iCloud - was warned that restore was not possible because the phone's "software is too old."
Hmm...

But today I re-upgraded. I remembered that I can use HopStop for mass transit in NYC.

Someone in the WSJ was quoted as saying the new Maps app was a "total failure." But at least while driving, I actually prefer the iOS 6.0 maps application. Unlike my chatty TomTom app, the new Apple turn-by-turn just gives me what I need. Each upcoming street is clearly marked, and there isn't a lot of extraneous stuff on the screen.
Agreed that the lack of pedestrian & public transportation thing is certainly a bummer for those that were relying on on that in Google Maps. But so far, I'm OK with the new maps.

All this stuff over turn by turn has been in google nav for so long now
Oh but 'flyover' isn't, I don't need to see a false roller coaster road or bridge anyway, do you?

Yeah, I agree that the whole "flyover" and "3D" thing is way overblown. It's not really useful.
I would much, much prefer being able to type a street address into Apple Maps and not get a "no results found". Really? You can't find "111 w 46 st ny, ny"?

You know, an interesting thing about Apple's cockup with their pathetic maps app is that I never really appreciated just how much of my personal smartphone usage was tied in one way or another to GoogleMaps and its integration into the phone/OS/other apps.

But, if this isn't fixed in a year when it's time for me to upgrade phones, I will definitely go back to Android. I'm halfway there already - Android integration with my life on Gmail is much better.

Yeah. I'm torn. I re-upgraded to iOS 6 because I'm a computer geek who can't stand not being totally up to date.

Paid-software has a tendency to lock people into not wandering too far from what they used before.

I had a Nexus One for a year and a half and had many nice Android apps that I paid for. I suppose the purchase record is still at Google somewhere - if I go back, they'll probably reappear on my new phone.
It seems that iOS still has better games, however...
