iOS 6 is here

Anyone finish the update process yet? My phone is about halfway through the reboot.

Looks like some interesting new features - including the ability to play a song on the alarm.

It's funny - I remember making fun of iOS people for accepting subpar functionality at a higher price. Now I'm one of those people...

(but let's please not turn this into another Apple bashing thread - there is one of those already)

I mainly am interested in peoples' opinions of the new OS as they update.

Yup, that's what I did.
  • The new Maps are pretty.
  • Passbook doesn't seem to do anything.
  • Do not disturb mode: it's about time! And it can be scheduled automatically.
  • They FINALLY put a Bluetooth toggle in the root Settings menu.
  • You can set caller ID to your phone number in FaceTime and iMessage, even when you're on an iPad.
  • FaceTime over 3G is nice

What else do you like?

BIG FAIL: the new Maps app can't do public transit routing. When you tell it to route you from place to place via public transit, it asks you to select or download a different app to complete the routing.

Passbook -- does not do anything. I hit the "App store" button and it takes me there and then it says "cannot connect to itunes store"

Hopefully, it should work by the time I get home.

If you want to Facetime over 3G -- does the other party also have to have the ios6 installed?

Can you update this OS on the older iPhones.... and more importantly, would you want to...?

Yeah, I get the same error. You only have to have iOS 6 if you want to FaceTime over 3G. It doesn't matter what the other party is doing.

It took about 10 minutes to download, and another 30 or so to install.

Yes, Apple has a list somewhere of supported phones. I think it's the iPhone 5, 4S, 4, and 3GS.

Reminder to save your SHSH Blob

tinyumbrella has been updated for iOS 6 so if you're planning to jailbreak, save your 5.1.1 SHSH blob.

Not all features are available on all phones. One review I read said that performance (measured by their benchmarks) was no worse than iOS 5 on a 3GS

Anyone else had this issue?

Totally underwhelmed. Was waiting for this to decide on getting the 5, now I'm waiting to get a better look at Windows Phone...

I like it so far, having updated to it several hours ago. Not a shocking improvement. That said, I haven't played around with all my apps to see if they all work just as well before and haven't tried all the new features. I am getting more "update" app notifications than usual. And at least one of the apps I had before have to be gotten back again. Also, had an issue with having my iTunes account in one country but doing the update in another country -- that I resolved.

Nice new features overall. I think I will stay away from acquiring an iPhone 5 for my own use, as this does enough for me on the 4S.
