Two questions related, if anyone knows:

a) The release of the 5 makes me think it might be time to get one of the $99 4S's that are now available - but will it come pre-installed with IOS 6?

b) Is the iPhone 5 running IOS6 reliably and untetheredly jailbreakable?
a) probably, unless you get one right now, and even then who knows
b) No

Because we are idiots! Seriously though, it is the only OS update that I have been disappointed with so have become accustomed to looking forward to some new features.

Yes I should have read some reviews first. Actually I did but I suspect they were written by corporate fanbois.

I doubt it, iPhone 5 isn't even being shipped with iOS6 is it? I bought my iPhone 4 last November after the 4S but before it had reached our shores and it had an ancient version of iOS

No idea.

I think it is a great idea. Spend some time in a foreign country that doesn't use the English alphabet, and you will like the ability to read the street names in English, not Russian, Korean, Japanese, or Cantonese.

I looked for the "always in English" setting, and I don't see it. I have an iPhone 4 running iOS 6, maybe the settings are different on the 4S and 5.

Today's Wall Street Journal has a front page article calling the Apple Maps as a rare blunder on Apple's part. Sorry for the absence of a link, I'm quoting from the paper edition.

More reason I'm going to wait on iOS 6...especially living in the UK and using maps quite frequently!

Link to the the story referenced by Dubai Stu:

WSJ: Apple Makes a Wrong Turn as Users Blast Map Switch

The criticism poured in world-wide as users of the new maps found misplaced labels for businesses and landmarks, cities with missing roads and erroneous features like a fractured river in Ann Arbor, Mich. A search for the Golden Gate Bridge yielded a marker roughly four miles away in San Francisco.

Complaints of the application came amid praise for the new iPhone and mobile software as consumers and bloggers took to dozens of websites—including Facebook, Twitter and a newly created blog sarcastically called "The Amazing iOS 6 Maps"—to circulate screen shots of the mapping errors and compare them to Google's service.

Yes it is a great idea for countries with a different alphabet, but it should be switchable. For a start there is no logical reason to transliterate Calle to Street and Carrera to Road in a country with a numbered grid system.

The "always in English function" did actually translate everything, but turning it off gave you a Spanglish map" where some roads (or carreras) had both English and Spanish names.

I forget where the option to turn on "Always in English" but I have an iphone 4 so it definitely exists.

Why is the Maps issue such a big deal? Just create a homescreen icon/shortcut to http://maps.google.com and all is well (until Google releases their own Maps app).

It's funny - I remember making fun of iOS people for accepting subpar functionality at a higher price. Now I'm one of those people...

(but let's please not turn this into another Apple bashing thread - there is one of those already)

I mainly am interested in peoples' opinions of the new OS as they update.
We have two iPhone4 and we upgraded the iOS6 couple of nights ago. On my phone, I cannot delete photos using iPhoto but my wife can delete her photos in iPhoto. Not sure why...

Because it's definitely not as good as the native Google iPhone app. The best thing, it seems, is to not upgrade until this is sorted.

Actually, no, it's not quite as good. I realize many seem to be pitching the web version of Google Maps as a panacea for this, but it's just not. The Maps app has a tight integration with other location aware apps. For example, if using say OpenTable and you want to click on the location of a restaurant, it's going to open that location in the default Maps application, not the mobile version of Google Maps (at least not that I'm aware of). Extrapolate that across all the various location aware maps, and it should become clear that your proposed solution is partial at best, and completely ineffective at worst, depending on a person's primary usage model for map related functions.

Maps Question - emailing pin locations

Currently I can drop a pin, and use it to share my location in email. The email contains a google maps url that can be opened in any browser.

Did that capability go away?

Any way I can access the maps with a browser before installing the upgrade?

Thanks ...

If you are near an Apple store, you could go there and play with an iPhone 5 that is on display.

I'd hoped to hear a pin drop was still available from the forum...

I'll use it to send myself the location of places I've been. And similarly I'll prepare a list of map URLs of destinations/attractions when I'm travelling. I really like map locations as URLs clickable on any platform.
