Holding an iPhone with iOS 6 installed is the only way I'm aware of that you could try the new maps app before you "buy." I offered you a suggestion on how to perhaps accomplish that.

Someone else would have to address the pin drop question; I haven't installed iOS 6 and have no immediate plans to do so.
