I've looked into this before, but sometimes it comes out more expensive to book two separate tickets (plus risk of not getting the transcon upgrade).
Also the unanswered question: if you are on two separate tickets, same airline/alliance, is there any 'protection' or are you SOL if a delay on the first ticket causes you to miss your connection to the second ticket.

You are not protected on DL although you may get a sympathetic agent (if not, call back a few minutes later). I'm not sure about the airlines mentioned in the deal above, tho.

SAN-BUF o/w $465 a/i on CO Z class paid business class. Not really a mileage run per se, but works out to about 11 BIS cpm, so might be a good positioning flight. Routing possibilities include LAX, SFO, IAH, EWR, and CLE. You can hop on CO 1811 and fly the 777 from IAH to EWR or BF equipment from LAX/SFO to EWR, and relax knowing you've got a paid J class seat when the inevitable downgauge happens.

Looks like DL and other SkyTeam carriers have matched or come close to matching.

DXB
I don't know if this will help you, but the cheapest and shortest flights to India are from DXB. I flew IAD to DXB and then took an inexpensive flight to DEL. One quirk--if you are not leaving on a *A carrier, they will not let you use the *A lounge--even if you are flying in business class. They will let you use it on the return.

Z is good but check W
I just checked and saw an EWR to LHR for $1475 ai in Z. WAS to CDG $1668. Both of these are certainly excellent fares. Since I have SWUs that I need to use, I checked the W fare. Great fare: $985 ai. A W class fare to Paris for less than $1000. I grabbed it. No, I don't have the security of a Z fare, nor the 50% bump in miles, but I did not want to pay more thatn 50% higher for this.
Added: This is a direct, non stop from IAD to CDG on CO. Just check .bomb...same days, same places: $1308 in W--and this is for a connecting flight.

Any more details on OneWorld flights? I'd be interested in SEA to CDG/MAD/BCN/FCO is the fares are <$1500. Thanks!
