There is also a time / traffic / lines / number of years left in one's life ratio. In my case, Safeway is very very close. The alternatives require 30 min of drive time through the most heavily congested arterial corridors in the clogged suburbia in which I am stuck. If potatoes are 10 cents a lb less at Food4Less, is it really worth that drive?
So I agree, it doesn't always make sense to criticize someone else's store of choice, even though I can see the critique as being intended to be helpful, as part of a total strategy analysis for net dollar savings.

Update: $10 safeway coupon with $100 GC purchase expanded to include many more merchants including Amazon ^ This is huge as we spend a lot on @Amazon, nice to get a 10% rebate
Hard to think of anything we need more than $25 worth of food. Safeway is the most convenient grocery and the prices are reasonable. The other options here are Whole Foods aka Whole Paycheck, Draegers (more pricey than WF) and TJs (limited selection). Some of us spend $$ on things besides travel.

GC promo works on Amex cards
I bought a variable 500 card and got 4 $10 off coupons. If you stick to just sale items you can score some awesome deals at safeway. I used these opportunities to stock up on sale items.

Has anyone else been able to replicate this? I won't be able to go out and try until later today, but given that today is the last day...

Yes. I bought 2 $500 AGC and got 4 $10 coupons for each one. My store's signage all says 12/9 is when the deal ends....is this not the case?

(At least, that's what I'm assuming. Getting 4 $10 coupons instead of 1, though, doesn't seem to exactly match the terms, that say "Get $10 ... when you buy $100 or more".)

I just got the $10 off $25 coupon for buying a $100 Amazon GC at Vons. I asked the clerk if I would have received two $10 off coupons had I bought $200 of Amazon GC and she said it's best to do the $100 separately, but it sounded like it was just her "better safe than sorry" opinion.

AGC is for the deal ending 12/9 (the one that includes amazon, best buy, etc); the terms for that explicitly mention American Express. This is separate from the deal ending 12/2 for MasterCard.
