On my three household accounts, I was able to buy a $500, a $500, and a $200 card (all using a 3 percent cash-back Amex card). I received the discount on all three. On the last purchase, the register also kicked out a "$10 off $50" coupon. Nice.

Ooooops, sorry, it was $10 off, which is a 20 percent discount on $50. I was mixing my metaphors!

I thought perhaps I could exploit "lag" in Safeway registering usage of the offer.
So I used card#1 for a purchase, got the $10 off. No need for manager override of a $500 transaction yay!
And the app still showed the offer on that card. So I thought this reflected batch processing of the offer. So I attempted to use card#1 again at another Safeway 10 minutes away. No dice. Had to cancel the purchase and switch to card#2. SO it seems while the offer may still show on your card for a while, corporate and registers at different stores, know you've used it very quickly.
FYI.

At the Von's I went to today, the $500 VGC was listed as $490, regular price $500. No over ride necessary. The Von's I go to , the cashiers pass around the manager over ride key, no manager involvement necessary.

Safeways by me pass around the override as well. Also, they can enter in a different phone number if the first one doesn't apply the discount.

Double dipped by buying Amex GC currently on sale @ OD/OM then used that to buy VGC @ Sway.

Worked for me. However, I went back again last night to purchase some more and was told that I have to pay for the cards with cash or debit.

thats completely wrong. was that just a cashier policy? safeway has no problems selling thousands of gc for cc. they should even have a policy book of each gc and what can be used to purchase it.

Each store may have their own policy. I've bought VGCs at Safeway with AGC 3x$500 without an issue. But got denied trying to buy 1x$500 with a credit card. YMMV.

I believe some managers/cashiers incorrectly apply the cash only policy for reloadables to variables, not realizing there is a difference between the two.
