So the consensus is that this "cash only" for beans is random. I still can't understand why they would hard code some area and let others slide, especially within the same city. I can't think of any logical explanation.

It is called "redlining," and it is illegal. Someone should report the bean seller to the feds.

Its not as random as you think. This is system related. This just shows how decentralized and uncommon, big corporations computer systems really are. Every time CVS has had an acquisition, there are dissimilar computer systems that need to be integrated. Various terminal vendors, databases etc are upgraded and rolled out over years. Regionalization is an issue. Everyone thinks that there is one big computer database linked to every terminal in every store. Change it once and everything is updated.

It just doesn't work that way. The cash only will be rolled out from the Northeast and then south and west.

The memo clearly says "Vanilla Reload Network" and the SKU next to it matches the label on the rack.

<15 minutes until midnight GMT ... I will be trying a final hurrah then.

I was impressed by the lady at the Reading CVS who tried it for like 5 mins. She goes " i did it yesterday and it worked". I stood there quietly hoping against hope.....no go!!

And add Newton, MA. Store had 2 VRs left so I took them. I go there every now and then, so the guy immediately said $500 on each, right? And then "Tender Type Not Valid". Like above, he said "It worked fine yesterday, and you have used that card before, right". He called his supervisor who was equally bemused, and then said "Oh, Verizon is working outside, maybe they are doing something to the phone lines" Yes, that must be it! So I bought a OV and left.

If you look at the list in the picture of the CVS memo posted on the blog Points Summary, all of the Vanilla Products listed as cash only effective 4/31 are reloadable debit cards like My Vanilla (in customers possession) etc. Nowhere is listed the so-called “Beans” or Vanilla Reload Network Prepaid Reload.
data point - East end of Long Island New York 4/31 6:20 PM 5 K

The memo lists the vanilla reloads at the bottom of the list. Pretty clear

Is this a coincidence of why the NE is 'hit harder' or the first ones to experience these changes?

If you read through the history of CVS:

It was founded on Merrimack Street in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1963, under the name Consumer Value Store....

In 1990, CVS acquired the 490-store Peoples Drug chain from Imsco, which established the company in new mid-Atlantic markets including Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia.

I had to come back to FT just to state that this may be the most entertaining thread I've ever seen here.

Geesh!

I'm guessing the guy doing this is a meth cook and hoping that by getting in the mgr's good graces so he will let him buy all the Sudafed that he wants without a DL scan:D. Meth cook intellect is all that could possibly explain it

This is exactly why I wasn't surprised to be one of the first to see the corporate communication.

Being 10 miles from corporate HQ we usually are the first to see the changes and actually have relatively competent cashiers thanks to frequent corporate drops ins.
