Interesting that seems to indicate that the change is due to increases in credit card fees.

Yes, curious they just didn't add a few $ to the card price and see how it would sell.

I'm not saying the people who MS are bad people. On average, we're probably no better or worse than anybody else. But the reality is that we're using our intelligence to game a system for personal enrichment. I can't claim it's a particularly noble endeavor. But if you're using the money for other good, more power to you.

As I recall the story of Robin Hood, he robbed from the rich and gave to the poor. When I go in to CVS, Safeway, Staples, etc., I select items to purchase and pay whatever price the merchant is asking. I also try to use coupons and any other discounts that merchants are offering (e.g., Safeway's $10 off coupon for buying a $100 MC GC, or the CVS Extra Rewards bucks) whenever possible. I don't view that as stealing, regardless of whether the product I'm buying is a VR card, a Starbucks GC, a bunch of bananas, or a tube of toothpaste. In addition, CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid offer products for free (or almost free) nearly every week through their various rewards programs -- when I take advantage of those offers, I don't view that as stealing either, even if the products are later given away to someone else (which my wife often does in helping our church put together care packages for members of the armed services who are stationed overseas).

I just did a tour of three local CVSs.

The first, nearest to my house, was out of VRs. (I think I bought their last one yesterday.) They didn't seem to know about a cash-only policy. At least, the usual clerk saw me, told me they were sold out of reloads, but didn't say anything about them going cash-only.

CVS#2 had plenty on the shelf but was cash-only. They had mentioned yesterday that they would be cash-only today, and they were. I asked out of curiosity whether they had tried and been blocked by the register, and they said yes.

Better luck at CVS#3. They had seven beans on the shelf, and now they have none. (:

The list would slowly go down, 1 store at a time, as they systems were updated and CC sales blocked.

So true! The burial at OD was more efficient, but there were a few stores in Chitownland that were still accepting CCs 2 weeks after the ax fell! I suspect that CVS will be more like OD than WG, but we'll know by the end of the week.

What an entertaining thread! Like reading a sci-fi novel where the deadly virus erupts in the NE and slowly spreads throughout the land......

Last day for buying VRs on CC at CVS in my area is 4/3.

Cashiers claimed they were getting "hit hard" and "losing money". Not surprising, because that suburb has the highest per capita income/home values in the Twin Cities, and you don't get rich leaving money on the table.

Easy come, easy go. Like all MS stuff, it's on to the next thing. We did get a bunch of nights at Starwood properties for our trip to China real cheap off VRs.

satman40 Mar 31, 2014 9:57 pm

Let's cancel the CC before the fee comes due, and take the 100,000 miles
Let's hide the VRC, Let's go for extra swipes,
Let's buy some cheap stuff and send it over seas..
Let's not Kid ourself, we are pigs...
I want to be in FC so the Kittle's can not use my bathroom...
CVS is cheating me, I deserve it all...
Love this thread...

It is officially April 1st.

April Fools guys! I made that memo.

No really the memo is real. At least we can still resort to cash advances for vanilla gorillas.

calwatch Mar 31, 2014 10:04 pm

As with everything MS, I'd still try it out for a few additional days, time permitting. The worst they can say is no.

Had my first DFW cashier tell me today they've got the memo and it's going away soon. She said she'll sell until it won't let her sell anymore though..

Cue the sad piano music.. I have gotten 20k though since the memo, so although I am saying goodbye, I'm saying goodbye with a bang!

I don't know what my life will be like after this...

It'll probably get lost in the field of reports, but seriously - what is wrong with some of you who are actively happy this is dying and that people are losing opportunities - mostly due to selfish issues?

First of all - personality flaw?

Second of all - killing the easiest MS'ing technique means here's this big group of rookies who have tasted the nectar of sweet manufactured spending and will probably be finding their way into YOUR niche pretty soon.

I always grow a little sadder, and a little more resentful of humanity when people take pleasure in other people's follies.

At this point the proper April Fools joke is to mock up a new memo from Cary Chaney that indicates he realized his mistake and he's reversing the last memo.

VR is the lowest hanging fruit. Hopefully those reliant upon this will perish of starvation.

I take it everyone will be migrating to Serve?
