at my local CVS purchasing a lone 500 bean, cashier scans the VR card, and it pops up something on her monitor to start asking me "Pre-paid debit card Fraud Alert Questions", such as :

1) Is the individual standing in front of you?
2) Are they a regular customer?
3) She then asked me for my phone number.

Now, I hadn't even told her how much to load on there, and I hadn't even told her I was going to pay with CC (at least I don't think I had). I know my CC wasn't even out of my wallet yet and I hadn't swiped or anything so there was no ID on me at all to this point.

Has this happened to anyone else? I thought I read about these questions in the forum, but I cant find the specific thread and search isn't being very helpful in pointing me to the proper post. I will keeping looking after this post, and if I find the answer, I'll edit here.

***SO I found a couple posts, it appears this is store-specific policy to protect them against phone call-in fraud?*****

Interestingly enough she never asked for my DL, or took any other info other than the last 4 of CC and the phone she asked me for.

Thanks for your help fellow MS'ers.

I've experienced the first question, and have discussed with 3 friendly CSR's. Anti fraud procedures, apparently there's been a run of phone in fraud, as well as people "winning the lottery" and being told to pay the "finders fee" via VR PIN....

No DL scan most likely b/c your charge was < $1k threshold.

.

My regular store has been going through these prompts for at least 3 weeks. One of my regular cashiers said they get at least 5 phone calls a day trying to buy/return these over the phone.

When I was in a different local store last night the cashier told me another guy comes in all the time for the VCG's and VR's and had just been in earlier to buy 4k. Then he asked me if I knew they could be used to pay bills like mortgage and student loans and still get CC points :D Thanks cashier!!

Now which one of you lives in a small New England city?.......

Datapoint - Bought $1k of beans (2X $500) today. For the first time, cashier asked me for phone number. All other aspects, e.g., DL scan, last 4, same as usual.

Went back to my local CVS today to buy another $5K of beans after buying $5K earlier in the week. Same cashier, always friendly, wished me a "nice flight and a nice vacation" after I left. I am not going anywhere until the end of the month. Now that's customer service.

2 of my regular CVS (in LA area) stated that i could only purchase 2 beans in one transaction citing internal policy.
Never had a problem of splitting 2x500 in the past.

I'm not in "all the time" and I would definitely not call the place I live a city. But I frequently patronize CVSs in a few small New England town with an abundance of VR. :D

Another data point, from Philly. My secondary location was stocked with VRs so I bought 2x $499 today with CC. Friendly cashier. No problems whatsoever.

This was unlike my primary location, where late last month the cashier called over to the manager (twice, two different cashiers/managers) for verbal approval.

It's so YMMV. The takeaway is simply to avoid the unfriendly locations and go to the friendly ones!

anyone know any CVS in san diego with VRs?

neuqua Mar 13, 2014 8:06 pm

Primary location was restocked today (yay!) and bought 2 x $500 without any issues.

Mine too, but not in CA. Son and me, 5K each. Still about 50 VRs hangin' on 4 pegs

I need to do some spending on my SPG Amex, but I seem to remember reading a couple instances about people having their accounts flagged from amex and/or the purchases not counting toward the signup bonus.

This is really just loading serve online since AMEX knows where it's going. DW and I have pumped 20k through each of our SPGs this month (first month) without issues.
