It's best to have the bank's number on speed dial. The "alternate tender required" message means that you hit a fraud alert with your card. If this happens just ask the cashier for a moment to call your bank and clear the fraud alert. You can then retry the transaction. As others have said, some cards require training, but you shouldn't get fraud alerts once they establish your spending patterns.
Is CVS blocking VRs with AMEX now? |
Bought $5k fine yesterday with Amex GCs

I was in a bad mood a couple of days ago and went to CVS to get some VR, the clerk refuse to sell them to because I was "money laundering", so I asked this clerk, What is money laundering? This clerk looked at me with the deer in the head light look. So I snapped back at this clerk, and said, hell you don't know what you are talking and just ring up these VR and stop playing games. This clerk started to cry and left the counter. The other clerk stepped up and rang me up without batting an eye. Before I used to just leave, but not now, education is the key for these people who throw around words they have no idea what they are talking about.

You can take VR cards from one CVS to another. Take a few, if you intend to use them.
You can't have a Serve Card and Bluebird Card in the same name. Gotta love it... |

Haha! While I feel for the clerk (my first job was in retail, and I worked as a CSR at a university while between programs), I never understood why some clerks seem to take things so seriously. It's a crap job at crap pay for a crap company. I was a minimum wage cash register jockey once, and during training the HR person said something like "if you see someone shoplifting or you get robbed, just give them the money and call Asset Protection as soon as you safely can. Don't risk your life trying to stop them." I said "OK," but I was thinking "For $6.75 an hour, do you really think I'm going to risk my life?" :P

After months of reading.......hopefully I am ready for MS . Went to my closest CVS and they only had "MyVanilla Card"........not Vanilla Reload Network. Did my "senior" brain miss something? Does any one know the difference? Can it be used like the reload card? Planing on loading my new BB. I did not buy it! Grandma Steppie

New data point, I have been buying beans at cvs since the beginning, the receipt has always said the cards have been activated, and have been able to load them right away. Today the receipt says-- prepaid card activation will occur within 24 hours-- sure enough I tried loading them and they aren't activated. Wondering if this is a one time thing or something new being implemented by cvs?

CVSs near me are getting used to Serve now and really helping customers. It seems good for their business as it does bring more people into the stores and I see VR buyers also buying other things in the store. Win-win for everybody.

True, buying a little candy for myself and getting $1.00 back is a nice treat for my VR runs.

I've gone to my local CVS twice now with 2 different cashiers and both allowed me to buy Vanilla Reloads with my Citi Executive card! My first CVS (the one closest to my house... of course) did not allow me to. However, the 2nd CVS is in a bigger city and they must be use to it. The 2nd guy knew about swiping my ID. They are allowing me to purchase $2k per day. That's fine by me!
Sitting pretty happy now that I know I'm going to meet my $10k spending limit for my AAdvantage card :D |
