I think there is no equilibrium in MSing. More and more people get into it, doubt anyone really drops out of doing it.

pro tip: always match the last 4 digits of the receipt to the card! i've bought so many and never bothered... guess it's time

had a close call today
went to buy 2 VRs
the first scanned well and paid (1/trans at this store)
the second did not scan so the cashier went to grab another, which scanned correctly

couple hours later, at home, and no go. the activated one was the one that she scanned first. i thought it was a scam, she was taking the VRs and would reload her own BB!! well, i drove back immediately (at midnight, 45min each way, i was in the area earlier) to this certain CVS and thankfully it was sitting behind the counter. if she had cashed it out, i don't think there would be a way to recover the money unless there was a big investigation, etc. be careful out there!

I had a similar experience with a GC purchase at another drugstore quite a while ago. The cashier said one of the cards did not scan properly and she then threw it in a bin that was behind the counter and went to get another one. When she came back she completed the transaction at a different register. Later that night, I discovered that one of the cards purchased at several stores that day was not activated. I was able to figure out what store it was because the card number on one of the receipts did not match any of the cards. Luckily, when I went back to the store the next morning I found the loaded card back at the gift card rack.

I still don't know how it happened that way, but before going back to the store I was imagining how it could have all been part of a scam.

Edit: Was thinking again about how it could have happened and it's possible the cashier threw the first card that scanned properly into the bin by mistake and gave me the card that didn't scan correctly or it WAS a scam and she changed her mind.

Moral of the story: as caGALINDO said, always check that the numbers on the cards you purchase match the numbers on receipt, especially if the cashier ever gets you another one.

Always love the accusations of people.
Just like on SD when people think store associates take all the goodies to supplement their income.

Geez - you just have to be careful in this game. As for suspecting that people may be dishonest, we auditors can confirm that it never happens. If banks had really money laundered, gamed interest rates and illegally foreclosed on homes then their CEOs would be in jail, right?:D

It was a thought running through my mind, not an accusation. In a perfect world that thought would never happen ;)

Looking forward to my next trip there, the cashier was actually very.... loving.

All of these discussion points about people hiding VRs in the store is simply sad. It makes me nervous in Milwaukee that the same is going on as I can't seem to find ANY VRs in my normal spots anymore...and that includes gas stations.

I know this is a long shot, but if you live in the Milwaukee area and know of where some beans could be found I would be appreciative.

Well here's a first... yesterday I noticed some long distance calling cards hidden behind the VRs! I think someone is doing it wrong.

Let's hope we don't come across each other at one of Chi's CVS's. It's because of small time players like you that CVS stores run dry in some areas. If you take only a couple at a time it will take a while before you deplete their inventory and their systems call for more. I was going to use some harsher words, but I held back in respect to other FT-ers.

+1

Gonna have to start asking the managers to hang them on or keep them behind the counters from now on. I hate these selfish pr***s.

I just now started thinking after that darn FTG article..
What does CVS do with all the ID scan information they collect? In order to screw many of us over all they would theoretically have to do is start reporting all our VR purchases to the IRS. Not that I'm too worried but still, what do they do with all the information, Only fraud prevention or more?

Don't really care. Lol. If they told IRS I was buying $XXk a month, I'd just throw my box of records at them and give them access to my credit records. "Have fun matching the two".

There's nothing illegal about what we do. Just be sure to keep records.

When you start thinking "or more", it's time to check your tinfoil supplies to make sure you have enough to last the winter.
