I am making the same journey MAN - FRA - HKG as I did 2 years ago this coming Xmas which means I will be transferring from LH947 to LH796 again.
I noticed that LH had schedule changed the departure time of LH947 from MAN in their winter 2014 timetable from 1745 to 1800 and now 1805 resulting in just 90 minutes (i.e. 15 minutes shorter) connecting time available at FRA. With LH796 now regularly departing from gate Z69 and that LH947 normally arriving with a bus connection to bus gate 1A, is this connection going to be tight given the walk required from bus gate 1A to gate Z69 with transfer security along the way?

How long of a walk would it be from the Z-gates where the A380 usually lands to the customs and terminal exit at A1 (and is A1 the closest exit to those gates)? I can't really get a sense of the size of the terminal from the pictures.

So if the person in question wants to avoid security for ORD-FRA-BKK then he needs to enter and then exit Schengen. So trade two passport controls for a security check.....
They should make it possible to go Z to B without security. So the Skyline does not work for Z to B for avoiding security because you are mixing with "unclean" non-Schengen pax to get on the train. Maybe they should have a third car for "clean" non-Schengen?

Arriving LH F passengers have access to the FCL on the day of arrival.
LH flights to BKK mostly depart from B as well. Flights could arrive (from almost anywhere) in C depending on the next destination of the aircraft.
As far as I know you cannot go to a non-Schengen B gate without clearing security unless coming from Schengen A/B. As an arriving/connecting passenger you can only go from Z to A without security if you arrive from the US. All other arrivals deplane on the level above Z and you will have to clear security to go anywhere (except of course the exit).

Last time at FRA this nasty woman starts picking through my carry on and pulls out every miniature hand cream and whatever and X-rays it. (!!) Meanwhile her pal was spending 5 min looking at the X-ray of every bag. This is worse than TSA. And then on the way back I get the secondary on my way up to Z.
Once again MUC FRA

Transfer
Flying PHL-FRA LH427 that seems to use gate B20+ (did see Z once) and then leave for DBV on OU417 that leaves from gate B28.
Do i need to go thru immigration and security again for this connection? If I want to use the Welcome Lounge will that mean exiting and then re entering?
How are the lines in FRA?

Just a quick follow-up w my experience yesterday, as this general set of connections seems to be a common one for discussion. Arrived on LH 433 at C16, departure on TG 921 was from B46. Both legs in F. TG agent was waiting at the arrival gate to escort us through the terminal to our flight. As others have noted we did have to clear security to enter B. We did not have our TG boarding passes at the time, but we're not asked for them at the security screening point.

If you want to visit the Welcome Lounge you will have to go through passport control to enter Schengen/Germany, and go through security and passport control again on the way to your departure gate.

Both arrival and departure gates can vary from day to day but if you are departing from a B gate there is no way you can avoid transfer security - even if you arrive at another B gate. If connecting from the US to Croatia you do not need to go through passport control in FRA.

It's impossible to say how long lines at security are since it depends on time of the day, time of the year, etc. If you are asking when to leave the Welcome Lounge I would leave it one hour before departure. Although the Welcome Lounge is better than some other lounges it does not have any view and with 5 hours between the flights I would leave the Welcome Lounge early and go to one of the other lounges. If you are departing in Business from a B gate, you should try the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge.

Thanks- right now it looks like LH 427 we land at Z25 -then we are on OU419 that right now is out of B56 -- I think B56 is close to the AC Maple Lounge? Do we go thru passport control and how much security to get from Z to B.. think we will skip Welcome Lounge since the AC club looks great and we have AC elite status and *Gold on OU419. Sound right?(Also can bring in one guest to AC)
The official route from Z to B will be to go to Z16, take the Skyline shuttle to the next stop (B/C) and walk to B transfer security. After security bear left, walk passed McD and keep going. Don't go down the escalator. You will see the MLL entrance on your right. B56 is a bus gate in the dungeon.
Yes, *G can take one guest into a lounge.
