It was closed three out of three times I transited FRA in the past six months, at various times of day. Signs were illuminated, but no sign of life otherwise. Ergo, I wouldn't count on it.

In that case the OP's sister-in-law and the girls had better go directly to the central passport control area without wasting a few minutes to go upstairs to check.

According to LH.com tomorrow's LH839 from BLL is expected to arrive at A34 and LH404 to JFK is expected to depart from Z58. Although the gates can change on the day, especially the arrival gate, your sister-in-law and the two girls can expect to walk at least 1km (with some walkways) between the two gates.
I have marked A34 (red circle) and Z58 (blue circe) on this map. Z58 is one level above but occupies the same position as A58 on the map.
From their arrival gate they will have to go to the central area where the old and new piers meet to go through passport control (and possibly document check) go up one level to Z and walk to the departure gate. There might be an additional passport control above gate A26 but I'm not certain if it is open. They should follow the signs for their departure gate and move as quickly as possible. If the flight from BLL is a bus arrival they will be dropped nearer the central area and should have less to walk.

But I agree, it is a 10 - 15 min stretch to walk through the A concourse.

Only thing to add is to appear at the security gate and ask to use the fast lane because you are on a tight connection and point out the departure time on your BP; traveling with kids, they should accommodate you.

Billund is Denmark and therefore the flight is not originating in a Schengen country. Security is the same as if they were arriving from UK or Asia.

Actually re-clearing security has nothing to do with Schengen/non-Schengen. One Stop Security should operate within the EU but unfortunately some countries (e.g. UK) have opted out and some airports (e.g. FRA) cannot operate it consistently. If you arrive in FRA from the UK you should not need to re-clear security but since most flights ex-UK arrive at B gates there is no way you can avoid transfer security. Some evening flights from the UK arrive at Z gates and you can avoid transfer security as long as you are connecting from certain gates. MUC can operate this arrangement very well. All ex-UK (and ex-US) flights arrive on Level H (rather than Level I which is an 'unclean' arrival level) and connecting passengers don't need to re-clear security.

Someone may want to ask at the new business lounge (former FCL A) which is located directly next to this passport control point and should be able to provide the information.

But Denmark is a Schengen country (with the exception of Greenland and the Faroe Islands). If your flight arrives at an A gate you don't have to clear security before a connecting flight.

Hello everyone!
The next 28th of July I've got a flight to SFO with connection in Frankfurt.
I've read some messages of this thread and also I downloaded the FRA Airport App and even studied maps of the airport But I still have some doubts... Hope you can help me!
My complete itinerary is MAD-FRA-SFO (MAD-FRA is flight LH1121 and FRA-SFO is LH454)
1)I have 1h and 35 minutes to do the connection, it's enought?
2) I've seen that flight LH1121 usually arrives at A-pier, in Brigde gates or Bus Gates. Do I have to go throught security check to go to Z-gates? Or only a Passport Control? (Flight LH454 departs from Z-gates, or that's what I've read)
3)There's any problem with mobile boarding pass and Passport controls? I read something about they put a sticker on you boarding pass or even they stamp it! I need to use the mobile boarding pass because I can't print it.
4)Lufthansa's Quick Boarding works with a mobile boarding pass? I think yes, but I don't know
Sorry if this questions are a little bit dumb... My first in such a big trip!
Thank you very much!

1 hr 35 mins should be enough for a connection in FRA. You don't need to clear security, just passport control. You shouldn't have any problem with a mobile boarding pass. If you have the time in MAD, you can have boarding passes printed for both segments but it really shouldn't be necessary.
Please check post #2623 for more information on connecting from a Schengen country (e.g. Spain) to the US.

Today's LH839 was a bus arrival 13 minutes late at T1A but LH404 departed 24 minutes late from gate Z62. I trust rinconmike's sister-in-law made the connection.

FYI. They made it through. There were two other people on the same next flight. LH had a bus waiting for the five of them and took them to the passport checkpoint. However, she was pulled for extra screening so that took a while and she thought she would miss the flight, but she got there on time. Not sure if they held the flight for them or if it was delayed for other reasons. Even with the delayed departure, they landed early.
thanks again for the help.

For IAD-FRA there are 4 flights, two UA metal and two LH metal. I have taken UA 989 twice and it gets a remote stand (V gate). I also looked at some days and the LH flights get Z gates whereas UA gets remote stands or once a C gate. I connect to flights from A gates and I would like to avoid security check and a long walk. I guess the solution is to fly LH but then I don't get Pre-Check in the US.......
From the remote stand you get dumped via bus in B. So I guess that you are then "contaminated" so there is no chance to avoid security if you get a remote stand? Why can't they bring the bus so that you are in a "clean" area for US/UK arrivals?
What's the best way to connect to A from a longhaul remote stand? There is a passport control right there on the lower level and then you head toward the arrivals terminal but make a U-turn to security (which security is this? transit only?). Here they are "worse than TSA-psychotic". And then you get the long walk in the tunnel.
Is it faster if I head up the escalator and enter the B non-Schengen area? Can you enter the B non-Schengen without security?
