Here's a picture of the 748i in FRA's hangar yesterday.

More photos are available on LH's website.

No hype. They're all subsonic aircrafts and very slow.

Concorde was the true Queen of the Skies.

All the others... meh...

Although between the two super-slow biggies I must say... I prefer the A380!

I think the A380 is a very ungainly aircraft to see. The 747 always is more elegant!

I for one find the A380 much more beautiful than the 747. It just looks much more elaborately engineered than the 747.

It is not a sexy plan on photos though and this is where the prejudice comes from. People who haven't seen it find it whale-ish. But if you happen to see a whale in the ocean you will very well perceive its beauty.

Great pic! Wonder why all of a sudden the engines have a "Scalloped" finish on their nacelle....There was be some engineering benefit.

The new Airbus is an engineering marvel, the best passenger aircraft that has ever been built with the exception of the Concorde. Speaking of the latter, it's amazing that passengers have been able to travel at supersonic speeds in the past... and now we've moved back a step by reverting back to "the usual."

As for the 747, we're speaking of something that is just a new version of a plane that's been jetting people around for 40+ yrs.

Ok interesting take. yea but the A380 is like a beached bloated whale in need of something. its cool in its own fashion, but is very different from the 47.

I would argue the 747 is also a feat of engineering and still the undefeated champion. It has been an overwhelming sucess and the program is still going

747-100

747-200

747-300

747-400

747-400ER (Qantas only)

747-800I

I mean the only other aircraft that has had more varients is the Boeing 737

The A380 wings look amazing, but you have to be either in front or behind the aircraft. From the side you don't see the wings very well and then the A380 look more like a Bavarian veal sausage.

The 747 however with the UD has a more interesting profile, different from all other aircrafts. That makes a 747 unique and most picture show aircrafts from the side.

However, at the end of the day only the internal values count for a good flight experience.

You forgot the SP variant...

Boeing definitely manages to give the 737 and 747 facelifts that make them live another 10-20 years. Inspite of being the launch customer for the 748i, LH definitely doesn't intend to make the 748i its flagship. From what we (rcs8551 & I) saw this summer, the F is going to be nice, but rather unspectacular (new seats, including a love seat where 4D is now, but food comes from all the way back and the lav is a very simple one, not even close to the refurbed A343/346 one), the C section upstairs and in the midsection will also resemble the unspectacular A380 dormitory. Y in 3-4-3 config will certainly not be as comfortable as the 2-4-2 in other longhaul.

This bird will be the bodylifter with massive capacity like the 346.

The Messerschmitt BF109 has been built in the variants:
A,B,C,D,E,F,G, the G1 through G15,
and its rival the supermarine Spitfire has been mass produced in more than 20 marks.

They both also have been built much more numerously than pretty much all jetliner fleets combined.

I am an admirer of and firm believer in Bavarian sausages.

Why spend money on the F when you can save cash by maintaining the gap to the C ..... ?

Don't forget the Japan-only domestic variants of the -400 (and I think -200, as well). Specially reinforced parts for high number of cycles in domestic operation.

Delivery of D-ABYA is set for January, but as todays news about ANA's 787 shows, some things ('minor issues') do show up in the final walkthrough...

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-1...s-delayed.html

FAA and EASA approval was obtained in time last week.
