I would argue the 747 is also a feat of engineering and still the undefeated champion. It has been an overwhelming sucess and the program is still going
747-100
747-200
747-300
747-400
747-400ER (Qantas only)
747-800I
I mean the only other aircraft that has had more varients is the Boeing 737

You forgot the SP variant...
Boeing definitely manages to give the 737 and 747 facelifts that make them live another 10-20 years. Inspite of being the launch customer for the 748i, LH definitely doesn't intend to make the 748i its flagship. From what we (rcs8551 & I) saw this summer, the F is going to be nice, but rather unspectacular (new seats, including a love seat where 4D is now, but food comes from all the way back and the lav is a very simple one, not even close to the refurbed A343/346 one), the C section upstairs and in the midsection will also resemble the unspectacular A380 dormitory. Y in 3-4-3 config will certainly not be as comfortable as the 2-4-2 in other longhaul.
This bird will be the bodylifter with massive capacity like the 346.
