I am not going to start a new thread for 2014 but rather combine the two years as to date the thread has only had 240 posts and is not enough to build enough stats especially with the introduction of Platinum during the year.
Unless there is opposition?

question: do you all who are posting these upgrades ask for one every time you check in? I mean, If i have no status (first time flying EK, will be in J)..should i ask for an upgrade and maybe if i get lucky they'll give it to me? or you're randomly called by EK staff (for example) while you're at the lounge, and get a surprise upgrade or something?

As you can see under "Upgrade location", it's mostly at the gate, in the lounge or at check-in. They scan or issue your boarding pass and tell you you're upgraded. It's done by an opaque system of Skywards status, fare class, miles owned and more (based on hearsay and personal experience). Although it's not fully clear who gets upgraded first, it's very rare for non-status pax, even less on the first flight.
In any case, asking doesn't help. They only upgrade people for free if they really have to (overbooking).

On a separate note, this was another trip with a very warm cabin; warm enough for the chocolate to become sticky (and for a change, got the chocolate without asking).

Excellent service on this flight as we ended having dinner on demand as a lot of people slept, the crew was serving breakfast/lunch when people were waking up...

At 4h prior to departure my pre-selceted seat was showing none so I was hoepfull to get an upgrade at check-in. Check-in agent told me flight was overbooked by 20 but still gave me a Y seat and not the one I had selected. Instead I got a seat in the middle of 4!! Really? Anyways the Check-in agent said there is a very likely chance I will be upgraded. And so everything turned out fine
