Upgrade location: Check-in
Route: SEZ to DXB
Flight number: EK 708
Type of ticket: Saver
Date of travel: 13/04/2014
Tier status: Two of us were upgraded - me a Plat and wife a Gold
Tier miles: ~ Me - 1,200 (reset to zero on 31st March 2014 - had requalified for Plat at that point) Wife - 53,000 approx
Skywards miles balance: ~ me - just under 1.1 million - wife about 94,000
Number of pax on the same PNR: 2 (oddly enough we started out on one PNR along with with our two kids and our two nannies all of whom are blue but I noticed through MMB that a couple of days before the return flight we had been split off from that PNR and were now on our own PNR)
First letter of your surname: T - as stated in outbound op up report which appears earlier in this thread my wife is B and is first named on the PNR as a result - tier status means nothing on a PNR orderwise so I suspect Plats on PNR with non plats will effectively be ranked based on the tier of the one on the PNR with surname that appears highest in alphabet - just my theory which was further reinforced on board when the Purser introduced herself to my wife but totally ignored me, this was probably a coincidence but ...

Hi, I had a strange experience today. Checked in early for EK 953 to BEY. Was told it is pretty full.
"Volunteered" at the lounge for upgrade. Was told that 6 people had to be upgraded, she checked there were no plats expected, but 10+ golds.
She put in request for me, and told me it is enough to check at the gate.

At gate guy said no, other were preferred, there were plats upgraded.
These stories do not match up. My guess is someone somewhere had wasta, considering that the flight is full of Lebanese, it could be true...

How many tier miles did you have, was it a flex or saver ticket?

They are pretty hot on doing upgrades in the correct order from dxb, and from man these days.

Lots of golds on DXB to UK flights especially the overnighters. There were 3 golds and 1 platinum in the forward mini cabin of the 777 I was on . I suspect that most Frequent flyers prefer the forward mini cabin on the 777. But that's nearly 50% ( there was only one pax in one of the 6/7DEF seats.)

Tier miles 55,600. And Flex.
What was very strange that one person at the lounge checked and there were not plats, and the guy at the gate (1.5 h later) claims that there were 6 plats...

Did EK change anything about their operational upgrade rules? I used to get upgraded every third flight (Y to J), but for the last three months nothing. I am a Plat, 500k miles, 130 tier miles.

Ugly on fully packed economy flights. Thinking about moving back to EY where I had a fantastic hit rate as EY Gold Elite.

Are EY as generous as EK in handling out op-ups? Wasn't quite aware of that

And do they follow the pecking order for status pax or is it disorganized...

EY is very organized about it. Gold Elites are always upgraded first. EY is generally an airline where employees follow the law-and-order approach, if you break a rule you are out quickly. So upgrades work like clockwork.
