I had four upgrades this year all due to Skywards Silver status and overbooked flights.

Three times KRT>DXB (Lame J Class / 4 hour flight) and once DXB>JFK (nice A380 J Class / 14 hour flight).

All upgrade were from Y to J.

All fares were Saver and all at check-in counter.

Each time I tell the check-in staff that I am Skywards Silver and would like an upgrade if the flight is overbooked. On some upgrades it seemed like I would not have gotten it unless I did this. FYI...

I wish I knew exactly what the winning formula is, I've had trips over the last few years where almost every sector has been the double bleep good news at the gate, then after the arrival of IO followed bu Platinum, it seemed to dry up, but now we seem to be, as you say on a roll. I can guarantee on my next trip (03.01.14) it won't happen though, as I'm booked in F for the Man - DXB leg, and it's a 2 class service from DXB - CGK and back, and an upgrade into Manchester never happens, to me at least.
