Minimum connection time at AMS
Note: when determining the airline for MCT purposes, what counts is who markets the flight, not who operates it.

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL: 50 minutes

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL, DL-KL, or DL-DL: 25 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL or KL-DL: 90 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-KL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL or DL-KL: 60 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-DL, DL-KL, or KL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL: anywhere from 40 minutes to 2 hours--it depends on the flight numbers and the dates. I've posted the raw output below to help you figure out which MCT will apply.

So today I got an e-mail from KLM changing my connecting flight to the later one with a 4.5 hour layover. I called Delta and asked for other options. They were surprised the short layover was ticketed and suggested the non-stop flight I wanted. Rebooked me in about 5 minutes.

I'm flying on Delta metal SEA to AMS (arriving 8:15 AM) and connecting to KLM metal on to VCE with 1 1/2 hour layover. I can't find which terminal Delta comes into and what terminal KLM intra-Europe flight will leave from.

Can someone answer this question please?

Note: I assume the answer will be the same on return FCO-AMS-SEA?

Thank you.

AMS is basically one terminal as it's one building. The important zones are schengen and nonschengen, which are separated by passport control and security (now in one direction only, going to Europe, but soon in both directions as AMS stops doing security at the gate for long haul flights). You'll likely arrive on the E concourse and depart from C, but this can change.

Connection time at AMS

Ok. I am looking at ATL AMS ARN. Connection time options are 4 hours or 55 minutes. I really want to take 55 minutes ,but.....can I make it? ATL AMS is on Delta. AMS ARN on KLM.

I wouldn't risk it. Since you'll be transferring to a flight within the Schengen Zone (Europe), you'll have to go through immigration. That could take awhile. Lines can be long. There is a priority line that tight transfers can sometimes get in, but it's risky.

I'd take the earlier flight and go into the KL lounge and take a free shower, eat breakfast, etc.

You'll love Stockholm, by the way.

The last two times I've been through there the Sky Priority lane has been closed.

I would also not risk it. Any delay in your first flight and you're for sure missing the connection. AMS is a nice airport to spend time in. The clubs are very nice as is the shopping and people watching.

OP, do you have status on DL? If you are Gold or higher you have free access to the KLM lounge there regardless of what class of service you are flying (this is true for all Sky Team international flights). Be sure to bring your medallion card with you, they can be sticklers about this. The card on your phone MIGHT work.

55 minutes should normally be enough and you should have plenty of time. Another 4 hours waiting after arriving in the morning isn't excaxtly tempting imo.

If you are Gold, Plat or Diamond take the most left line.

I'd try the 55 minute connection. It's certainly makeable, though you could have a long walk. If you miss it, you just get on the one that's later anyway.

As ATL-AMS is on a DL-operated flight it should be very doable; DL pads the schedule by >30 min relative to European carriers. If ATL-AMS were KL-operated, I would be a little less optimistic regarding your chances.

If you only have a carry on and won't be too set back by a missed connection then it might be worth it (could you get a later flight if you miss it?). With a checked bag, I have pretty mixed experiences connecting at AMS with short connections.

Last year, I had at least ten flights with short connections of an hour or less at AMS and made all but one and that was due to an hour plus maintenance issue in ATL. Immigration is easy and quick and as long as you know what to do at security, you can be through in ten minutes or less.

I've had mixed experiences at AMS passport control and security between schengen and nonschengen. The last time, there was a long wait because the employee who seemed to be managing the passport control lines refused to enforce anything and let everyone into SkyPriority. Very frustrating in an otherwise pleasant and efficient airport.

Take the 55 minute connection. They will move you to the front of the line at passport control. Worst case they move you to the later flight. Did this all the time with the AMS-CPH/BLL flights.

I didn't know they are removing gate security. That will be nice as those holding pens are unpleasant.

How is that going to work for non-Schengen to non-Schengen connections though? Will non-Schengen arrivals funnel into a central transit security before being released into the terminal?
