Minimum connection time at AMS
Note: when determining the airline for MCT purposes, what counts is who markets the flight, not who operates it.

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL: 50 minutes

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL, DL-KL, or DL-DL: 25 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL or KL-DL: 90 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-KL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL or DL-KL: 60 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-DL, DL-KL, or KL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL: anywhere from 40 minutes to 2 hours--it depends on the flight numbers and the dates. I've posted the raw output below to help you figure out which MCT will apply.

not a huge deal … we have a hotel that night at FRA on points and a 1400 departure the next day; both morning AMS-FRA flights have award space available
No. You would need
  1. Deplane and make it to immigration.
  2. Clear immigration at AMS
  3. Collect bags
  4. Checkin before checkin cutoff with German Airways
  5. Clear security, especially during summer, this can take hours. (OTOH Transit security is quick and efficient but you won't be using it as you'll be entering the country)
  6. Make it to gate in time to board.
This really isn't likely even if exactly on time.

Now without bags, it'll be possible IF German Airways let's you checkin at the gate. In this case you'll
  1. Deplane and make way to transit security
  2. Clear security and make way to transit immigration. (You're entering the Schengen area, so must clear immigration at AMS)
  3. Make it to gate in time to checkin
It'll be tight, but is doable, as long as on time and ZQ allows checkin at gate. (They don't do OLCI)

If you can get the flight on KLM they could check bags through as long as connection is under 24 hours at AMS.

it’s a DL award … KL flight number, with a notation that it’s operated by German Airways

the “Seat Selection” link on the app says “Oh no! We’re sorry but seat map for this flight is not available. Contact German Airways GmbH …”

the fact that KL wouldn’t sell BKK-AMS-FRA on these flights should have been a clue (but along the same lines, I’m a bit surprised that the 13-hr overnight connection didn’t appear)

KLM will be able to check the bags through in this case. Here's what is causing confusion, there's two types of codeshares.
  1. Codeshare as known by most. Airline A sells a seat on flight of airline B. The flight is wholly operated by and for airline B. Ie DL9645 is really KL668. DL is simply selling you a seat on OAL flight. You checkin with KLM, your bag tag had the KL668 flight number on it, etc..
  2. Codeshares where airline B is operating on behalf of airline A. Ie DL3833 is operated on behalf of DL by Skywest. Skywest is not operating this flight for itself, there is no tickets sold by Skywest for this flight. It's why they can't also have OAL sell tickets on the flight. This is also called a wet lease agreement. Think back a year when BA was short on planes and had to ask QR/AY to fly for them, these weren't QR/AY flights despite the crew and plane being QR/AY. There was no QR/AY flight number.
Your flight is the 2nd type. While ZQ crew and plane will fly the route, it will be in essence a KLM flight. You will checkin with KLM, KLM will handle your bags, your bag tag will have a KL flight number printed on it. It why despite being a codeshare flight number, there's award seats available on it. This same thing happened years back with AF and Cityjet. Back then really caused confusion as some flights were the 1st type and some the 2nd. Thus you could book a DL ticket on some, but not all AF CDG-DUB flights, despite Cityjet flying all of them, as some were type 1 and some were type 2.

Most agents, like passengers are only aware of the 1st type. If was 1st, the KLM agents would be correct. KLM has no interline agreements for bags, etickets, or even paper tickets with ZQ.

so it’s a tossup as to whether KL agents at BKK will actually be able to check a bag thru to FRA on the KL flight that ZQ operates obo KL

I’m beyond 24 hrs from purchase, so probably better off to change the award flight to the next morning, get a hotel near AMS, and cancel the hotel at FRA

As FlyerCO pointed out these are actually KLM flights operated by German Airways as wetlease for KLM. KLM has about 35-50 % of their Embraer fleet grounded because of the known engine problems and therefore started to wetlease certain EU shorthaul flights ( NUE, FRA; DUS ).
You should be able to check your luggage through with KLM at check in.

Should be no issue to check bags. Agents at airport will simply enter KLM flight number and KLM PNR. Don't even mention ZQ.

Looking to fly JFK->AMS->ARN on KLM. JFK flight lands AMS at 06:50. Can either have a 1:30 or 3:50 connection. Will be travelling with my upper 70yo in-laws - one will be travelling with a gate-checked wheelchair. He can walk - slowly, and not terribly far. While 1:30 ordinarily is enough at AMS, I think the possibility of a delay ex JFK, coupled with a wait for the chair to be unloaded might make this uncomfortably tight? With the long connection, I suppose we could use the nap pods in lounge 52 for a while.

My vote would be for the 3:50, especially with elderly travelers and any sort of a delay at JFK.
CBS and donkeydork like this.
